Standard Activity 8.33C – Community Relations
Community relations is something that every school strives to do better. From
education, to sports, to extracurricular activities, and community events, parent involvement is
essential. At Huntington High School, we are fortunate to have two part-time (actual paid
positions) called “Parent Partners”. These two ladies come to meetings regarding parental
involvement and are also big players in the use of title 1 funds in order to get parents and the
community more involved.
On the front lines of our parent involvement are these parent partners, the student
support staff, the counselors, leadership team, and the administration of the high school. We
collaborate often to figure out how to bridge the connection between community and school. A
huge obstacle during the pandemic has been HOW to get vital information out to the parents
and community. We host a plethora of events for students and the community, but how do we
get this information to them as to the upcoming events.
One way is that the head principal, Dan Gleason, sends out “all-call” messages via phone
and text. He can narrow down the parents that receive these messages to certain “groups” that
the information pertains to directly. This is a far cry from the call-out system that calls everyone
to tell them about what is going on in the middle school. Another way we get vital information
out is using the schoology platform.
As a department, along with the department chair Jessica Kidd, we compose a monthly
newsletter and add it to schoology for the senior class to inform them of items such as:
 Scholarships
 Workshops – such as tax filing and FASFA
 Parent nights – such as free admission to sporting events and family movie nights
 Senior summer school – to try to keep graduation rate
 Graduation information
 Senior Awards
The above items are only a drop in the bucket of the information in these newsletters. We also
email the students to let them know of additions and make morning announcements to check
schoology. This newsletter is often coupled with call outs made by Mr. Gleason, especially if
there are very important events coming up! I have attached a copy of the April senior scoop as
part of this standard assignment.
