JAMES SALTER’S DAYS IN FILM
James Salter was a pilot in the United States Air Force. He abandoned the military profession in
1957 after the publication of his first novel, The Hunters. He is best known as a novelist, but during
the sixties and seventies, he worked in film making. Salter made documentaries, wrote texts for
films, and even was the director of a film called Three, starring Charlotte Rampling and Sam
Waterston.
In Passionate Falsehoods, which was adapted from Salter’s book Burning the Days, published in
The New Yorker in 1997, Salter tells the story of his life in film.
Salter’s time in the film world is both good and bad. In Rome, he met directors and stars. In New
York, he explored the city with Robert Redford and enjoyed being famous. Deborah Treisman and
Michael Agger have talked about Salter. Nick Paumgarten in The Last Book, describes Salter’s
opinion about his film career:
“Of sixteen texts for movies, only four were popular. There was money, attractive women, and
entrance into rooms where there were stories more for the dinner table than for the page.” Salter
thought he was wasting his time.
Perhaps he wasted his time in a larger artistic way, but it still makes for attractive reading. The
Last Book is available to everyone in online stores.

Reading Comprehension – Informational Passages Directions: Read the passage. Then answer
questions about the passage below.
Marco Polo was born in 1254 in the Venetian Republic. The city of Venice, Italy was at the center
of the Venetian Republic. When he was 17 years old, he went to China with his father, Niccolo, and
his uncle, Maffeo. Pope Gregory X sent them to visit Kublai Khan, the emperor of China. Kublai
Khan liked Marco Polo. He enjoyed Marco Polo’s stories about many lands. Kublai Khan gave
Marco Polo a job. He sent Polo on diplomatic missions. He also made him governor of Yangzhou,
an important trading city. When Marco Polo went back to the Venetian Republic, he talked about
his life in China. Few believed his stories. In 1298, he went to jail during a war between Venice and
Genoa. While he was a prisoner in jail, he dictated his stories about China to another man in jail.
The man wrote down the stories. The stories became the book, “The Travels of Marco Polo.” Each
chapter of the book covers a specific region of China. Each chapter is about the military, farming,
religion, and culture of a certain area. The book was translated into many languages. Marco Polo
got out of jail in 1299. He went back to Venice to join his father and uncle. He became very rich. In
1300 he got married, and he and his wife had three children. Marco Polo died in 1324. He was

The original Olympic Games took place at Olympia in Ancient Greece in 776 BC. They
included arts competitions as well as athletics, boxing, wrestling and chariot racing. The
first modern games took place in Athens in 1896, and continue to take place every four
years in different countries of the world. The Olympic flag, with its five rings, represents
the five continents of the world. The Olympics are the traditional "world championships"
of athletics, but there are many other sports competitions- swimming, rowing, gymnastics
and others. At each Olympics, the Olympic committee includes new sports, making each
Olympics more exciting than the last. The winter Olympics are for sports such as skating
and skiing. They take place two years after each Olympic Games. Competitors in the
events win medals: a gold medal for first place, silver for second, and bronze for third. The
very best athletes from all over the world compete in the Olympics. The Paralympics are
for people who have got physical disabilities. Some of the competitors are blind or deaf
and many of them compete in wheelchairs. The Paralympics take place after the Olympic
