Flats plan refused
PLANS by Muir Group Housing Association to create eight flats on land at Hamilton Place,
Hoole, have been refused by Cheshire West and Chester councillors. The scheme was
deemed to be detrimental to residents of nearby Gosforth Place.

US-style selection for Tories

Almost 50 Hoole residents chose their Conservative Candidates at a public meeting.
It was the first time a US-style ‘Open Primary’ has been used for local elections in
Chester. The residents did not have to Conservative Party members and did not have to be
Conservative voters.
There were four candidates chasing two places for May’s election and the public chose

1. How long will it take to obtain a divorce?

From issuing your petition for divorce to obtaining the Decree Absolute which dissolves your
marriage can take approximately 4 to 6 months but this is dependent on your partner not
defending the petition and replying to your petition within the given time table. If your partner
fails to cooperate we will take steps to prove service of the petition upon your partner to ensure
your divorce can proceed.

2. How much will it cost me?

We will fix the cost of your divorce so that you know exactly how much it will cost you. You may
have the option of seeking costs from your partner.

3. How do I resolve who stays in the house and how much income, capital and
pension I will receive?
You and your partner are required to provide full and frank disclosure of your income, capital
assets and pension provision. With this information, we can advise you what you are likely
to achieve by way of settlement. We will prepare the necessary Court documents to record
any agreement reached to ensure the agreement is legally binding and enforceable. To help
negotiations you can attend mediation or enter the collaborative process. Our aim is to keep
matters as amicable as possible for you and to avoid Court proceedings. If however you can not
agree or your partner will not provide the information required, you can issue Court proceedings
to resolve this matter.

4. What happens if we can’t agree arrangements for

our children?
If possible it is better to agree between you where the
children live and how much contact the other parent has
with the children, if you cannot agree then you could both
attend mediation to facilitate discussions and assist you
in agreeing the arrangements. If that is not successful
then either one of you could make an application
to the court for a contact or residence order,
to decide where the child will live or to deal
with a specific issue, for example where the
child goes to school. Child maintenance would
also need to be paid to the parent who has the
full time care of the child. This can be dealt
with through the Child Support Agency. The
amount depends on your income and how
many children you have, and also depends on
the number of overnight stays you have the
children for.

One of my favourites quotes is “If you
always do what you’ve always done, you’ll
always get what you ve always gotten”
(A Robbins). It’s so true and yet doing
something different can be so difficult.
We are human and part of being human
is to take the path of least resistance .
Watching a TV programme about other
people losing weight can feel so much
more comforting than braving the cold
winter evening to go get hot and sweaty at
the gym yourself.
Now is a time when we come face to face with
how our lives are progressing year on year. We
glimpse where we are at and when we dont like
what we see , we declare a couple of New Year
resolutions to make ourselves feel better...and
then we settle back into our comfortable habits.
One of my clients Melody started last year as
a size 20. She was not only overweight but in
serious debt , living in a cluttered shared home
and she had no job and no money. She had been
living this way for years before she really took
a good hard look at herself and her life. She
realised that she had to do more than make a
New Years resolution. She had to change her
habits, her lifestyle and even the way she was
thinking.
The trouble is that its difficult to think
differently all by yourself. Thats why its
important to get some support , a personal
trainer, a nutritionist or a life coach. You need
someone who s going to show you a new way
of thinking and being; someone who s going to
keep you on track when the going gets tough and
someone who will see you always as the person
you aspire to be rather than the person you are

greasy hair was a pretty flirty young girl looking

Once Melody made the commitment to change

small part time job and she moved home to

say what she wanted and what she didnt want.
She learnt to go out and party without drinking
alcohol. She learnt to enjoy a family Sunday

requested. And bit by bit the weight dropped
off and her self esteem grew. She found herself
a better job and started her own business. She
started to buy pretty clothes in smaller sizes and
then she attracted a gorgeous loving boyfriend.
She went from a size 20 to a size 10. She went
from having no money to earning over £1000
a day in her own business. Melody turned her
life around in less than a year. Why did she wait
years to make that change? Maybe she wasnt
ready before then? Maybe she was too scared to
be slim pretty and happy? Maybe things had to
get really bad before she was prepared to jump
out of her comfort zone and change her habits.
Take a look at your life . If something is not
working , now is the time to get real and make
a commitment to the you that deserves better.
You can be do or have whatever you wish. It
just takes a decision, a commitment and a
willingness to let go of the “old you”. Every
day that passes where you ignore your true
wishes has an impact on your self esteem and
confidence. Whether you really want to give up
smoking, lose weight, change your job or earn
more money, now is the time to do it. If Melody

Founded in 1896, Hoole LTC is a
successful and friendly tennis club for
all the family. The club is conveniently
located close to the centre of Hoole and
boasts five all-weather courts, two with
floodlights, in pleasant surroundings.

Youthful additions bring added
strength to Rangers’ squad
Following a long layoff due to the bad weather at the end of last year the season kicked
off again in January. The first two Hoole Rangers FC 1st team fixtures played in January were
representative of the season so far, with a fantastic 5-1 win in the Challenge cup against West
Cheshire side Upton AA Reserves, followed by the worst display of the season, losing on penalties
after extra time against Chester and District Division 2 side Uberlube in the Senior cup. In the
other games played to-date we suffered a 1-0 defeat by current league leaders Kelsall, the goal
coming in the last five minutes of a closely contested game, and a 9-3 victory over Crossways.
After the signing of nine new players over the Christmas period, Hoole Rangers FC reserves
used their January fixtures as trials, looking at how the new players can gel with the existing
squad. Despite losing three games, there were some really good signs that the new young players
will significantly improve the quality of the team, and hopefully resolve the Saturday morning
frenzy of phone calls trying to get 11 players on the field.
The number of players turning up for training on Tuesdays from 6-8pm on New Scene all weather
area is growing week by week, with more than 20 now the norm. We are therefore looking for
sponsors, or internal fundraising events to allow the purchase of additional floodlights so we can
utilise the full area.
In conjunction with Chester and District Football League committee and Councillor Reggie
Jones, we held a meeting with CheshireWest and Chester Council to see how to improve the
pitches generally in Chester, with my focus specifically on our home pitch at Limewood fields,
which suffers badly with drainage problems. One of the options we are exploring is whether Hoole
Rangers can lease the Limewood fields pitch which would allow us to take more control of the
playing area, and possible look for funding to improve / extend the current drainage system.

I had already decided that this year I was keeping the New Year celebrations low key.
What I didn’t bargained for was the flu and spending the night on the sofa wrapped in a
duvet watching Jules Holland on TV while the neighbours threw a party that spilled out
into the street as well as their backyard. I sat listening to them laugh and clink glasses to
various toasts and wondered what I would have been doing if I hadn’t been taken ill.
At midnight I was aware that the music had subsided and when I looked out of the window
the sky was full of lanterns. With my duvet wrapped tightly around my shoulders I stood in the
backyard and watched the glow of peoples wishes lift off into the sky. The romantic in me warmed
at the thought of the amount of dreams the people of Hoole had let loose and now only the moon
seemed able to catch a glimpse of.
Last year I had written myself a letter and sealed it up, tucking it into the box of decorations
as they were stored away for another year. I had pulled it out a few weeks ago when we had
decorated the tree and had tucked it behind the clock on the mantelpiece. As the last of the
lanterns faded into the night sky, I came back into the warmth and opened my letter. It was filled
with the same stuff I wrote every year about health and happiness, the usual stuff you’d say
to people at New Year and it also mentioned my resolutions. Typically, I had written down my
list of good intentions, sealed them up and had instantly forgotten about them the moment the
decorations were down.
So this year I decided I was going to be more rigorous. I was going to make resolutions that I
could keep and be proud of myself for keeping. I decided five was more than enough and easily
manageable and so set about writing them down and sealing them into the new letter ready to be
read next year. I opted to walk more and leave the car at home. I vowed to keep an eye on my
portion sizes and stay away from takeaway foods. I intended to stay in touch with people more, to
throw open the lines of communication and write, email or call my friends and family a little more
often. I wrote that I was going to keep on top of the washing up and do my bit around the house
and lastly I decided that this was the year I needed to finally get shot of the belly and look good in
the photos for the wedding this coming December.
Pleased with my resolutions, I decided not to mention them to anybody else. Like blowing out the
candles on a birthday cake, I thought that mentioning them would somehow jinx them. As the tree
was folded away and stored under the stairs, so too were my resolutions.
Heading into Faulkner Street the following day, I met the neighbour who had thrown the party. He
was looking a little worse for wear but was in a tracksuit and was jogging back from the Co-op.
“Wow!” I said. “You’ve started the new year as you mean to go on.”
He flashed me a smile and then vomited onto his trainers. Maybe a build up to the resolutions
was a better idea. So with that in mind I continued to purchase some bread (healthy multi-seeded
stuff) and milk (so skimmed it was nearly transparent) and then filled the rest of my basket with
the cut price left over Christmas stodge and set about eating my way through the reminder of the
weekend. Well, if I am going to start walking everywhere and healthy eating, I am going to need
to build up my strength. Pass me that Pain Au Chocolate and a packet of Cheese and Onion. Oh
and that caramel slice from the deli that’s in the fridge but you better make that cola a diet cola,
I’ve got resolutions to uphold!

give the roses a feed of rose
fertiliser and mulch around

Start planting vegetable
seeds under glass or on a
windowsill. Towards the
end of the month, you can
plant out your first early
seed potatoes provided they
have little shoots about half
an inch long. Dig a trench 9
inches deep and put a layer
of well rotted compost in the
base of the trench. Plant our
potatoes about 1 foot apart
and cover over with soil. If
you only want a few plants,
potatoes can be grown in
large pots or plastic bags.
Look out for the first flowers
of spring with the daffodils
and crocuses, flowering
current Ribes sanguineum,
and forsythia. The winter
jasmine, Jasminum
nudiflorum can be trained as
a wall shrub if kept clipped
and will have lovely yellow
flowers in mild weather
throughout winter. If you
like foliage plants look out
for the unfurling buds of the
various types of euphorbia.
Some are small such as
Euphorbia amygdaloides
Purpurea with dark red
foliage whilst others will
make a plant about 3 feet
in size with blue grey/green
foliage and yellowy green
bottlebrush bracts. Smaller
perennials such as Primula
Gold Lace will also make
an appearance with their
chocolate brown petals
edged with yellow.
