MEET THE CANDIDATES:

Rob Halfon (Conservative)
AGE: 41 MARITAL STATUS/CHILDREN: I am very lucky to have my partner, Vanda. EDUCATION/CAREER: I went to Exeter University, where I was very active in student issues. In my younger years, I did various stints, selling windows, hotel memberships and even financial collecting services. I worked for almost a year in a geriatric hospital in Israel, and in recent times have taught English in Rwanda to adult students. I have been a political researcher, adviser and consultant to businesses on public affairs. I am currently a selfemployed consultant on public affairs. I am also an author having published articles on a range of subjects. HOBBIES: I have a passion for and collect watches. I go regularly to the Eversden family watch shop in the Harvey Centre! I love Indian food and I try and read loads of books and adore the countryside. I am a big football fan. LINK WITH THE TOWN: I love living in Harlow and have been Harlow Parliamentary Candidate for nearly 10 years. My relative owned the John Walton clothes shop in Harlow town centre for many years. WITH THE RECENT JOB LOSSES AT GSK, HOW WILL YOUR PARTY STIMULATE JOBS IN THE TOWN? I recently met a Harlow resident who

had applied for more than 4000 jobs. We need to end the high tax, high debt and wasteful spending that has been the hallmark of Gordon Browns Government. We must lower taxes, give young people the skills they need to succeed, and bring jobs back to Harlow. We must support organisations like Seetec in Terminus House that help the unemployed get back to work. Conservatives will restore Harlows economy by: lowering taxes for local companies and small businesses, cutting National Insurance contributions, to ensure businesses have more money to hire staff and opportunities for our young people and thousands of extra places at colleges and universities. ARE YOU FOR OR AGAINST THE HARLOW NORTH DEVELOPMENT? My worry about Harlow North is that there have been no guarantees from Gordon Brown to support the extra

infrastructure that is needed - extra schools, roads and rail for example. There has also been little genuine consultation with local people. We need to go back to the drawing board, and scrap Gordon Browns undemocratic and unsustainable plans. Wherever housing is built, local residents must have a real say. Conservatives will incentivise local communities to build some houses by creating local housing trusts and will match all council tax receipts on local house-building. Of course we need new housing, but let local people really decide, where our new housing is to be built. TRANSPORT IS A KEY ISSUE IN HARLOW. WHAT IS YOUR POLICY ON ROADS AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT? For a number of years I have been campaigning hard for an extra bypass to the M11, a junction 7A. In 2007, I

NEXT WEEK
set up a website in 2007 www.fedupwithharlowtraffic.com to highlight the problem and sent a petition card to every house in Harlow. Like most motorists, we are frustrated that after 13 years of Labour, nothing has happened except warm words from Government Ministers in the months leading up to the election. If I am elected as your MP, I will work day and night until we get agreement for a bypass to be built. It will take time, but we should not have had to wait 13 years. I am glad that I have got questions asked in Parliament about this, and that Essex County Council has pledged a proper feasibility study. A Conservative Government will cut congestion, but also make transport fairer. Harlow suffers from serious speeding problems in Hastingwood, Potter Street, and other areas, and we need to find a solution that works for local people. We will maintain the free bus pass for pensioners.
