Deck of Playing Cards (Bicycle)

The process of the production of playing cards at Bicycle is first starting with two rolls of paper,
unwinding them together and bringing to the laminator machine which refining the paper such as
straitening. Through the help of another machine, it will stick together using a black glue. The two rolls
of paper are now put together which represents the stack of playing cards without any design so far.
After that, it will bring into the web press and unwind the rolls and print the desired design. It sated that
25 inches of rolled papers can accumulate to 25 deck of cards. Web press can produce 10 decks per
second which is fast for the production. Lastly, it is cut manually because nothing substitutes the human
app and before that it is manually checked by the trained technicians for any errors before proceeding
to the packaging of the deck of cards.

The raw materials that are used in making playing cards is dependent to the quality of the deck
of cards because there is paper made and plastic made. For the paper made deck of cards the raw
material that is used in a Layered paper which is much stronger and qualitative than a normal paper and
for the plastic made it has the polyvinyl chloride acetate (PVCA) and it involves the opacifying materials,
dyes, and plasticizers to give it the proper appearance and consistency.

The production of deck of cards is not complicated so it only consumes a lot of electricity in the
production because the production is mostly aided by the machines and fuel in some equipment. It is
distributed internationally so it is available in any platform of transportation since Bicycle is widely
known for the deck of cards production. The whole deck is a waste product after it was consumed
because there’s a limitation in the use of deck of cards since it is only a paper, the quality of the deck
becomes poorer when used multiple times, especially me since I’m doing cardistry I play a lot of time of
the deck of cards which lessen the quality of the deck because of the consumption of the product.
Additionally, cardistry is a form of art wherein flourishing the cards and used sometimes by the
magicians.

Through the Life cycle analysis of the deck of cards I see that there are still emissions in the
production even through it is only a combine paper with imprinted design. It is not only in the
production but also the distribution also causes emission because of the fuel used for the delivery of the
product internationally. As a consumer I can see that I have a role to do since I mostly buy the product
once a month due to the carelessness in my decks and wanting to have a new deck to experience much
better deck in doing cardistry yet I am not aware that I am already causing an emission of papers. I can
decrease the waste product by taking care of my decks in the longest time as I can and there are deck
clips that are available to use for prolonging the life of the deck and another alternative that I can do is
to buy a deck without the carton box to lessen the waste in the packaging of the deck and use the old
ones for the box. I have friends doing cardistry and by sharing this thought, it can help to lessen the
waste product in consumption of deck of cards.
