WHAT IS A DOWRY?

A dowry is a gift of substantial monetary value given from

either the bride or groom to their future spouse upon
marriage.
BUT Now days Dowry system makes it necessary for a bride’s
family to give dowry in cash or kind to the groom’s family
as a pre-condition for marriage. After marriage, some
families demand more dowry and when it is not fulfilled-
either because of the inability of the bride’s family or the
denial of the bride herself- the groom and his family abuse
and kill the bride.

LAWS FOR ACID ATTACK

The Section 326 A in the Indian Penal Code lays down the
punishment for acid attacks. The minimum punishment is 10
years’ imprisonment. It can extend up to life imprisonment
with fine upto 10 lakhs.

CAUSE OF ACID ATTACK

Most survivors of acid attacks are women and girls. The most
common reasons for attacks on women and girls is the refusal
of marriage, the denial of sex, and the sexual rejection of
men and boys. It is an expression of control over women’s
and girls’ bodies.
Acid attacks are mostly ‘crimes of passion’ out of jealousy
of a man. It is a crime greatly associated with marriage and
relationships, most of them being about a man’s ‘honour’
being demeaned by a woman who refused to marry or settle
with him.
