Nubian Museum, Aswan

Established as part of the UNESCO International Campaign for the Establishment of the Nubia
Museum in Aswan and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo, the Nubia
Museum in Aswan opened to the public in November 1997 and has won widespread praise for
the quality of its design and collections.

This museum traces the history from the earliest settlements to present day of Nubia, the region
defined as the area between Aswan in Egypt and Khartoum in the Sudan.

The Nubia Museum occupies a 50,000 square-metre site on the banks of the Nile at Aswan,
7,000 square metres of which are given over to the Museum building.
A two-storey museum constructed of local stone and located on top of a rocky hill. The plan and
expression derive from ancient temples, fortresses, and the domestic architectural vocabulary of
the region.
Designed to evoke traditional Nubian village architecture and finished in local sandstone and
pink granite, the Museum was one of the winners of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in
2001.
