1. Charged Soap Bubble:

Note:

1. You do NOT need to calculate any numerical values.

2. The charge on bubble is uniformly distributed. The presence of the tube does not affect the
distribution of charge.
3. In part (b), you need to show the derivation of the pressure. (Just the answer will not
be accepted)

Hints: The Force on a thin layer of charge is equal to its charge times the average magnitude of
the electric field on both sides of the layer. i.e. ) ; you can use this fact
without proving it.

For part (b), you may want to consider the forces on a surface that divides the sphere into two
equal parts.
2.

Hint: You may find this integral helpful:

3. Ball on a roll:
A ball of mass m, radius r is placed on a table. The coefficient of friction is n.
the ball is pushed with an impulse p horizontally along its center. The moment of inertia of a
spherical ball about its center of mass,

a) Find the torque applied by the table on the ball about an axis passing through the center
of mass of the ball.

As the ball rolls over the rough surface of the table, friction force decelerates it and slows it
down. But after a while when rolling without sliding condition is satisfied (ωr=v , where
ω=angular velocity), the velocity settles down to a particular value.

b) Find the time t it takes to meet the condition v=ωr.

c) Find the energy loss due to friction in time t (of question b)
4. Light Curve:
The light curve A shown below, shows a fictional edge-on eclipsing binary system containing
stars X (radius rX, luminosity LX) and Y (radius rY , Luminosity LY ) . Assume that star X is brighter,
but star Y is hotter.

a. Which star is smaller?

b. Use interpolation to estimate both the total duration of the eclipses and the duration of
the “bottom flat part”.
c. Using your answer in part (b), find the ratio of their radii r x/ry.
d. Find Lx/Ly , the ratio of the Luminosity of the two stars.
e. Assuming Mx>>My (M is mass). The Doppler shift of absorption lines arising in the Star
X’s atmosphere was also measured, corresponding to a difference in radial velocity of 30 km/s
(relative to Earth) between the beginning and the end of the eclipse. Find the approximate
radius and mass of the star and the radius of the orbit of Star X.

*If you could not solve no. b, assume reasonable values for the eclipsing periods.
