2. (a) Differentiate linear and non-linear circuit elements with examples.

(c) Determine current in 28 ohm resistor using superposition theorem in the
circuit shown in Fig. 1 (4)

(d) Determine the Thevenin's equivalent of the circuit given in Fig. 2 as seen at
terminal AB. Derive Norton's equivalent circuit from the Thevenin's
equivalent. If a variable load resistance is connected across A and B,
determine maximum power delivered to the load resistance using maximum
power transfer theorem. (6)

3. (a) An alternating current is given by i = 70.71 sin (520t + 30°) (A). Sketch the
waveform and determine the
(i) frequency in hertz and time period in milli-second
(ii) rms value of current and
(iii) instantaneous value of current at t = 0. (4)
(b) 
Two sinusoidal waveforms are given as v1 t   100 2 sin x 314t  30 
 
and v2t   200 2 sin 314t  60 . Express both the waveforms in polar and

rectangular form and express the summation of voltages in sinusoidal


waveform. (3)
(c) A series R-L-C circuit with R = 20 ohm and L = 0.05 H has an applied
voltage V = 100 + j200 V with angular frequency 1200 rad/sec and current
I = 5 < 0. Determine the value of capacitance in micro-farad. (4)
(d) A parallel R-L-C circuit with R = 20 ohm, L = 0.5 H and C = 50  F is
connected across an AC voltage V. If the current in resistor R is 0.02 < 30A,
determine voltage V and total current in the circuit. (4)
4. (a) An inductive coil with resistance R and inductance L is connected in series
with a resistance of 10 ohm. The ac voltage applied to the circuit is 36 V at
50 Hz frequency and voltages measured across the resistance and the coil
are 20V and 22.4V respectively. Determine the value of R and L of the coil.

(b) Define active power, reactive power and apparent power. A single phase
motor with 0.8 power factor draws a current of 5 A from a 230V, 50 Hz line.
Determine
(i) the apparent power drawn by the motor
(ii) the active power absorbed by the motor and
(iii) the reactive power supplied by the line. (5)
(c) What is meant by balanced three-phase system? Explain and illustrate
graphically. (2)
(d) A three-phase balanced delta-connected load draws 1500W power from a
400 V, 3- phase, 50 Hz, supply at 0.8 lagging power factor. Determine the
phase and line currents. (3)

5. (a) Explain the principle of operation of a transformer. What will happen if the
primary of a transformer is connected to DC supply? (4)
(b) In a 50 kVA transformer, the number of turns on the primary and secondary
windings is 834 and 58 respectively. If the primary is connected to a 3300 V
supply, determine
(i) secondary voltage
(ii) the primary and secondary currents when the transformer is fully
loaded. Neglect the losses. (3)
(c) What are the principal components of a DC machine? State the functions of
each Component. (5)
(d) What is back emf in DC motor? A 250 V DC shunt motor takes a total
current of 20 A. The shunt field and armature resistances are 200 ohm and
0.3 ohm respectively. Determine the value of back emf. (3)

6. (a) Derive torque equation of a DC motor. Establish that for a DC shunt motor
the torque is directly proportional to flux per pole and armature current. (5)
(b) State the salient features of three-phase induction motor. Why three-phase
induction motor is described as “transformer-type" AC machine? (5)
(c) Explain the principle of single phase induction motor? Name various types
of single phase induction motor and its field of applications. (5)

7. (a) Describe the importance of the following torques in a measuring instrument:


(i) Deflecting torque
(ii) Controlling torque
(iii) Damping torque. (3)
(b) How do you classify moving-iron type instrument? Describe with neat
sketches the construction and working principle of any one type of
moving-iron instruments. (7)
(c) A PMMC-type instrument gives full scale deflection of 5 mA when the
voltage across it is 100 mV. Determine the value of
(i) shunt resistance for full scale deflection corresponding to 10 A
(ii) series resistance for full scale deflection corresponding to 100 V. (5)

8. (a) Briefly explain the basic requirements of domestic wiring. (3)


(b) What is fuse and what is its purpose? What will happen if no fuse is
provided n the electric circuit? (3)
(c) What are the functions of earthing in an electrical installation? Describe
any method of earthing. (5)
(d) Draw wiring diagram of a circuit consists of one lamp and one socket outlet
which are controlled by individual switches. (4)
