A. INTRODUCTION
1. Description
This unit concerns with Formal Invitation texts. Formal Invitation text is an invitation
which follow dignified form, tone or style in agreement with established norms,
customs, or values (Webster, 2012) This learning activity will help you to build personal
relationship and interaction with others by inviting people to various events, such as
graduation ceremonies, annual dinners, anniversary parties and birthday parties
2. Relevance
Understanding, applying and comparing the social functions, the generic structures and
the language features of Formal Invitation, You can improve your comprehension, and
your English skills and competence towards these materials.
3. Learning Guide
Pre-Activity
This activity will guide you to understanding basic knowledge of Formal
Invitation Text
Main – Activity
You will elaborate to some examples of Invitation Text. You will also analyze
the parts of Invitation Text to see how different structures of Invitation Text
present to meet their social / language purposes.
Post – Activity
In this learning activity, you will observe and comprehend the text structure, the
language features, the social function of Formal Invitation Text. You will also
produce Invitation Text which are contextually acceptable social function, text
structure and language features.

In this section, you are going to learn two types of formal invitation. Some sources of
learning are provided two videos to identify some information related to formal
invitation.
a. Definition
Do you familiar with Formal Invitation? What possible topics can you have to invite
other people formally? To help your understanding towards the definition of this formal
invitation and the topics of invitation, you need to learn and read more examples about
the formal
invitation. The following video 1 and video 2 provide one type of formal invitation.
Please, watch the following two videos carefully, and answer the questions provided in
TASK 1 to help your understanding towards the definition of this type of formal
invitation.

Read the following invitation letter. Pay attention to the structure.

When you receive an invitation, you can either accept or decline it. If the invitation requires
RSVP, you should respond as soon as possible.
1. Accepting an Invitation
When writing an accepting invitation letter to an event, the letter should be brief.
The body of the letter should:
- inform an appreciation that was felt upon receiving the request,

- provide a brief section outlining the confirmation of the details of the event including the
date and time, and
- Inform the invitee that the person will be attending by giving respond to the contact of the
RSVP.
2. Declining an Invitation
When writing a declining invitation letter to an occasion, follow these guidelines below.
a. Express appreciation for the invitation.
b. Express regret that you must decline. Your regret sounds more sincere if you can give a
specific explanation of what prevents your acceptance.

1. You are a parent who has a new baby then you want to celebrate the birth of your baby.
You want to invite your friends. This occasion will take place at your home.
2. Your school has an annual event, Parents Day. You are a staff of school, then you should
make the formal invitation letter for parents. This event will be placed at your school. To
make it cohesive, you ask about special request, dress code.
3. You are opening a new Indonesian restaurant. You want to invite your friend to the grand
opening. The event will take place on 27th July at 7 p.m at Cakrawala Street 68, Padang
