EXPLORE
Direction: Deteremine whether the statement indicates the importance of elements.
Write “Yes” if the statement indicates the importance and “No” if it’s not.
_________1. Elements make up the matter of a human body.
_________2. Elements helps prevent some deficiencies.
_________3. Elements makes our body develop diseases.
_________4. Elements constitute bulk of our diet.
_________5. All elements have the same properties and roles in our daily life.

COMPOUNDS
A chemical compound is a chemical formed from atoms of
different chemical elements. The different atoms are joined by chemical
bonds. The elements stick together so strongly that the compound
behaves like one substance. The chemical that is made depends upon
what atoms it is made of and how they are joined together.

Hydrogen
Oxygen Oxygen
Chemical structure of water (H2O)

Chemical compounds can be liquids, like water which is made from atoms

of hydrogen and oxygen joining together. They can also be solids, like sodium
chloride that contains sodium and chlorine atoms. We get compounds from natural
sources such as plants or make them in laboratories. Compounds can be made from
others by scientists and these are called synthetic chemicals.
When different compounds are mixed
together they can have a chemical reaction.
The compounds may join together to make one
compound or change into several new
compounds.

Two colorless liquids react to make a yellow

solid

Chemists are people who study

compounds and find new ways to do
chemical reactions. They make chemicals
in order to find new ways to do things, like
to make a better glue, or to make
new medicines, or to make things clean, for
example. They also use
compounds to find out more
about the laws of chemistry.

ENGAGE
Direction: Which of the following diagram is a compound? Put a check mark (√) if the
diagram is a compound and (X) if not.
Note: One type of shape indicates one type of element.
Example:

_____√_______ 1.

____________ 1.

____________ 2.

____________ 3.

____________ 4.

____________ 5.
APPLY
Direction: Color the shapes that will indicate the type of that element to make it a
compound. Each box must have two or more colors to make it a compound.
Example:
