The rocks of Saudi Arabia is ranging in age from the Precambrian to the present
day, forming part of a larger unit that includes the Arabian Peninsula and is known
as the Arabian Plate. Some Precambrian rocks in this region date back to the
Archean (3 million years ago) but most are Neoproterozoic (1000-540 Ma*). They
margins, and were folded and uplifted toward the end of the Precambrian as a large
belt of mountains. The mountains existed between about 680-540 Ma and were part
of one of the largest mountain belts ever known to have existed on Earth. By the
end of the Precambrian, the mountains had been eroded and only their roots are
The Site is located date back to western part of East Arabian Shield along the red sea and
the according to previous studies, the deposit this region dating back to the area of the
quaternary, which spread along the coastal plain and the main valleys. This deposit covers
The deposits have been divided in to seven units. The deposits is raised reef limestone that
crops out along the coast inland it is covered by terraced gravels, alluvial fans deposit and by
wind-blown sand, on land the limestone has been raised 3-6m above sea level where it is
poorly exposed because of a covering of fissile -rich sand and by overlapping Sabkhah and
alluvial deposits further inland. The fossiliferous sand is rich in gastropods and is a mixture of
wind -blown sand beach sand and back reef lagoon fauna thrown up by waves. The above
mentioned area show that the surface formation at the site consists of heterogeneous
calcareous rock/soil formations of coralline origin. Similar coralline formation is appear along
the Red Sea Coast that has a variation in degree of cementation range from slightly cemented
silty/clayey coralline sand, coral limestone calcareous silty sandstone, calcareous silt and clay.
The coral formation has been formed in the young geological past and there is no densification
or solidification effect has taken place. The geological map is attached in appendix (I).

After the visual inspection of the site, the requested scope of subsurface geotechnical
investigation that defined by LARSEN & TOUBRO LIMITED was performed through 5th to 24th
The locations of all tests and bulk samples are shown on the enclosed site plan presented
in Figure 1, Appendix I while the logs of the boreholes and test pits are shown in Appendix II,

8.1 Equipment
All borings were drilled by the use of a truck mounted Mobile B-53 drilling rig
utilizing tricone bit with casing and double tube core barrel. The rig is capable of
drilling in soils and rocks, and is equipped to undertake field tests such as SPT
and driving casings to support the borehole sides. Both sampling and field
Hydraulic jack and Plates to support the stiffness of main plate used.
Split-spoon disturbed soil samples were recovered from various depths below the ground
surface level. Standard Penetration Test (S.P.T) was conducted at every 0.75 m interval for
the upper 3.0 m depth and continues in 1.5 m interval in soil formations with the use of 140 lb.
The SPT sampler (Adapted trom ASTM D1586; Copyright ASTM. used with permission)
(S.P.T) were performed in accordance with (ASTM D-1586). The sampler was driven 45
cm depth at 15 cm intervals. The (N) value reported on borehole logs is the sum of number of
blows required to drive the sampler into the soil for the full 30 cm, after the 15-cm seating
distance, or until refusal. The following correlation can be used in estimating the relative density
of granular soils from the (N) values shown on the boring logs.

volume of soil to determine the conductivity of the soil. Data collection used in the tests is a
manufactured by Megger. The Wenner method involves the use of four probes or electrodes,
driven into the ground along a straight line. A battery current from the Resistivity meter is
caused to flow through the soil between the outside probes. Due to the resistance of the
subsurface, a voltage gradient is established between inside probes by the current flow. The
equipment measures the voltage gradient and current flow from which the average resistance
of the formation mass to a depth equal to the distance between the probes can be calculated.
Resistivity of the strata is then computed from the instrument reading according to the following
formula:
P = 2 n a.R
Where:
a = Electrode spacing
Resistance measurements at each line were conducted with variable probe spacing to
relate subsurface conditions to its electrical resistivity. The resulting soil resistivity is expressed
in ohm-meter. The electrical resistivity tests results are attached in appendix (111.1).

The Contractor shall furnish, produce, stockpile, blend and mix all necessary
materials using such equipment and procedures as will produce specified aggregate

Geotechnical Properties of Soil
AASHTO System
The AASHTO Soil Classification System was originally proposed by the Highway Research
Board’s Committee on Classification of Materials for Subgrades and Granular Type Roads
(1945). According to the present form of this system, soils can be classified according to eight
mujor groups, A-l through A-8, based on their grain-size distribution, liquid limit, and plas
ticity indices. Soils Usted in groups A-l, A-2, and A-3 are coarse-grained materials, and those
in groups A4, A-5, A-6, and A-7 are fine-grained materials. Peat, muck, and other highly
organic soils are classified under A-8. They are identified by visual inspection.
The AASHTO classification system (for soils A-l through A-7) is presented in
Table 1.7. Note that group A-7 includes two types of soil. For the A-7-5 type, the plasticity

Determination of approximate compressive
3.3 Compressive strength strength values made with the point load testing
Compressive strength values of rock are used in equipment has the advantage that tests can be
the determination of bond strengths at the rock/ conducted on lengths of unprepared core in axial
concrete interface in drilled piers and tensioned and diametral directions, as well as on irregular
anchors, and for the bearing capacity of spread lumps of rock (ISRM, 1985). The equipment is
footings. In the case of bond strength values, portable and can readily used in the field. The
empirical relationships have been developed principle of operation is that a compressive load
between compressive strength of intact rock and is applied through two conical platens which
working bond strengths that have been found to cause the rock to break in tension between these
operate satisfactorily in practice. In the case of two points. If the distance between the platens
is D and the breaking load is P, then the point
spread footings where the bearing area is larger
load index /s is given by:
than the spacing between fractures, the bearing

strength of the rock mass. The following is a
discussion on methods of determining the com where De, the equivalent core diameter, is given
by:
pressive strength of both intact rock, and the
rock mass. De - D2 for diametrial tests
= 4A/n for axial, block and lump tests
3.3.1 Compressive strength of intact rock
and A - WD is the minimum cross-sectional area
The compressive strength of intact rock can of a plane through the platen contact points (W is
readily be measured using either a compression the specimen width).
