C. INSTALLATION OF THE NEW CARDAN-PIVOT JOINT ASSEMBLY

(Refer to Figure 1 and Figure 2)

NOTE: The cardan-pivot joint assembly (1) must be adjusted symmetrically to the piston rod (17).

(1) Measure and record the distance E between the faces of the spherical bearings installed in
the cardan-pivot joint assembly (1).

NOTE: The distance E must be measured where the piston rod (17) will be connected.

(2) Measure and record the width F of the piston rod (17) where the cardan-pivot joint assembly
(1) will be installed.

(3) Calculate the thickness X5 of the laminated washer (8) as follows:

X5 = (E - F) / 2

X5 = Calculated thickness to that the laminated washer (8) must be adjusted

E = Distance between the faces of the spherical bearings installed in the cardan-pivot
joint assembly (1)
F = Width B of the piston rod (17).

(4) Adjust one laminated washer (8) to the calculated thickness X5.

NOTE: The laminated washers (8) are made of a number of shims. Each shim has a
thickness of 0.05 mm (0.002 in.).

(5) Temporarily install the cardan-pivot joint assembly (1) and the adjusted laminated washer
(8) with the bolt (5) to the piston rod (17).

(6) Measure and record the distance X6 between the piston rod (17) and the spherical bearing
installed in the cardan-pivot joint assembly (1).

(7) Adjust the second laminated washer (8) to the measured thickness X6. Make sure that the
symmetry between the piston rod (17) and the cardan-pivot joint assembly (1) is 0 ±0.05 mm
(0 ±0.002 in.).

(8) Remove the bolt (5), the adjusted laminated washer (7) and the cardan-pivot joint assembly
(1) from the piston rod (17).

(9) Measure and record the distance G between the faces of the ball bearings installed in the
lever assembly (9).

(10) Measure and record the width H between the faces of the spherical bearings installed in the
cardan-pivot joint assembly (1).

NOTE: The width H must be measured where the lever assembly (9) will be connected.

Initial Issue : Aug 24/15 5038A-67-01

Revision 1 : Mar 23/16 Page 7 of 11
SERVICE BULLETIN

(11) Calculate the thickness X7 of the first laminated washer (7) as follows:

X7 = (G - H ) / 2

X7 = Calculated thickness to that the laminated washer (7) must be adjusted

G = Distance between the faces of the ball bearings installed in the lever assembly (9)
H = Width between the faces of the spherical bearings installed in the cardan-pivot
joint assembly (1).

(12) Adjust the first laminated washer (7) to the calculated thickness X7.

NOTE: The laminated washers (7) are made of a number of shims. Each shim has a
thickness of 0.05 mm (0.002 in.).

(13) Temporarily install the cardan-pivot joint assembly (1), the adjusted laminated washers (8),
the lever assembly (9) and the first laminated washers (7) with the bolt (5) to the piston
rod (17).

(14) Measure and record the distance X8 between the spherical bearing spherical bearings
installed in the cardan-pivot joint assembly (1) and the ball bearings installed in the lever
assembly (9).

(15) Adjust the second laminated washer (7) to the measured thickness X8. Make sure that
the symmetry between the piston rod (17) and the lever assembly (9) is 0 ±0.05 mm
(0 ±0.002 in.).

(16) Remove the items that follow from the piston rod (17):

– The bolt (5)

– The cardan-pivot joint assembly (1)
– The lever assembly (9)
– The first laminated washers (7)
– The adjusted laminated washers (8).

(17) Apply a thin layer of Molykote DX (M302) to the thread of the bolt (5).

(18) Attach the cardan-pivot joint assembly (1) and the lever assembly (9) to the piston rod (17)
with the items that follow:

The laminated washers (7) and (8) with the correct thickness
The bolt (5)
The washers (4) and (6)
The nut (3).

(19) Torque the nut (3) between 7.5 to 8.0 Nm (66.4 to 70.8 lbf.in.).

(20) Make sure that the cardan-pivot joint assembly (1) and the lever assembly (9) have no
clearance and can be moved easily.

(21) Safety the nut (3) with the cotter pin (2).

(22) Apply a thin layer of Ardrox 3140 (M122) to the head of the bolt (5).
