NACELLES/PYLONS INSPECTION FIREWALL SEALING MODIFICATION

1. Planning information

A. Effectivity
(1) Learjet 55-003 thru 55-147.

B. Reason

(1) Learjet has received information that the firewall sealing application does not meet engineering
standards.

C. Description
(1) This Service Bulletin provides instructions to inspect, clean, and seal the gaps in the engine fire-
wall on the pylon side.

D. Compliance
(1) It is recommended that this Service Bulletin be accomplished within the next 12 months after

receipt of this Service Bulletin.

E. Approval
(1) FAA approval has been obtained on technical data in this publication that affects airplane type
design.

2. Accomplishment Instructions

(1) Set Battery Switches off and disconnect aircraft batteries.

(2) Remove LH and RH pylon upper and lower plug panels and attaching parts. (Refer to Learjet
Maintenance Manual, Chapter 54.)

NOTE: The following instructions apply to both LH and RH pylons.

B. Modification of Aircraft

(1) Inspection of forward and aft electrical conduits and the throttle cable guide. (See Figure 1.)
(a) Inspect the forward and aft electrical conduits and the throttle cable guide for injection of fire
wall sealant.

(b) if both electrical conduits and the throttle cable guide are sealed, proceed with step 8.(2) of
this Service Bulletin.

(c) If the electrical conduits and the throttle cable guide are not sealed, seal as follows:

1) Thoroughly scrub the forward and aft electrical conduits and the throttle cable guide with
scotchbrite and clean cotton wipes wetted with Dapco 2000 diluent and cleaning solvent.

NOTE: Clean surface as many times as necessary to be certain that no residue


remains on the surface of the firewali where firewall sealant or firewall sealant
primer will be applied.

2) Brush a uniform thin coat of Dapco 1-100 primer and allow primer to air dry for at least 1
hour at room temperature or until a dull red color develops.

NOTE: Cure of the primer shall not be accelerated with application of external heat
source.

Temperature throughout application and cure of primer shall be no less than


40"F [4.4"C] with relative humidity no less that 40%.

Sealant shall be applied within 30 minutes, but no longer than 90 minutes,


from the time the primer has cured.

3) Injection seal both electrical conduits and the throttle cable guide on the pylon side with
(Refer to Learjet Maintenance
18-4 firewall sealant. Manual, Chapter 20.)
(2) Firewall
Sealing Modification
(a) Thoroughly scrub all surfaces that come in contact with sealer with scotchbrite and clean cot-
ton wipes wetted with Dapco 2000 diluent and cleaning solvent. (See Figure 1.)

NOTE: Clean surface as many times as necessary to be certain that no residue remains
on the surface of the firewall where firewall sealant or firewall sealant primer will
be applied.

(b) Brush a uniform thin coat of Dapco 1-100 primer on the surfaces to receive firewall sealant and
allow primer to air dry for at least 1 hour at room temperature or until a dull red color develops.

NOTE: Cure of the primer shall not be accelerated with application of external heat
source.

Temperature throughout application and cure of primer shall be no less than 40" F
[4.4"C] with relative humidity no less than 40%.

(c) Apply a gap seal with 18-4 firewall sealant on thepylon side to the following areas, between
the forward engine beam and fireseal, aft electrical fitting, bleed air line, fire extinguisher fitting,
and between the aft engine mount and aft fire seal as follows.

NOTE: Sealant shall be applied within 30 minutes, but no longer than 90 minutes from the
time the primer has cured.

Cure may be accelerated with application of heat. Apply sealant, allow two hours
dwell at ambient condition, followed by application of 150"F [65.5"C] to 180"F

[82.2"C] heat and relative humidity not less than 50%. Higher relative humidity
level of 70% is recommended.

(d) Extend the sealant over the edge of the gap by 0.25 inch [6.35 mm] to provide adequate adhe-
sion to the metal.

(e) Feather the sealant into all contacting surfaces with


spatula or fairing tool.

(f) Fillet seal with 18-4 firewall sealant on the pylon side of the following areas: throttle cable

guide and the fwd electrical fitting. (See Figure 1.)


(g) Prior to fillet sealing, fill any gap of 0.02 inch [0.508 mm] or greater by injection sealing. (Refer
to Learjet Maintenance Manual, Chapter 20.)

(h) Apply fillet seal. (Refer to Learjet Maintenance Manual, Chapter 20.)
(i) Allow sealer to cure for 72 hours.

C. Restore Aircraft to Airworthy Status


(1) Install LH and RH pylon upper and lower plug panels and attaching parts. (Refer to Learjet Mainte-
nance Manual, Chapter 54.)
(2) Connect aircraft batteries.

D. Complete the attached Compliance Response Form and return as soon as possible.

E. Complete aircraft maintenance records In accordance with FAR 43.9.
