Chapter 10: Data Analysis and Statistics Practice Worksheet

Please complete the following problems. The answers are at the end of the worksheet.

1. Frequency

After riding a roller coaster, 110 people were surveyed. 18 screamed zero times, 29
screamed once, 17 screamed twice, 18 screamed three times, and 28 screamed four or
more times. What is the relative frequency of people who screamed only once? Round
your answer to the nearest whole percent.

2. Mean, median, mode, and range

A group of 9 people have ages of 3, 4, 12, 12, 15, 29, 34, 44, and 63 years.
1. What is the mean of their ages?
2. What is the median of their ages?
3. What is the mode of their ages?
4. What is the range of their ages?

3. Quartiles and percentiles

A group of 20 cats is ordered from lightest to heaviest. Furball has a weight of 6.5 lb,
the highest weight in the first quartile. If four new cats with weights between 5 and 6 lb
are added to the group, which quartile will Furball be in then, and how many cats in his
quartile will be heavier than him?

4. Standard deviation

Consider the two lists:

5, 6, 7, 7, 8
3, 9, 10, 11, 19
1. Which list has the higher standard deviation?
2. The standard deviation of a set of data is 1.5 and the mean is 18. How many standard
deviations above the mean is 24?

5. Normal distribution

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

1. If X is a random variable that is normally distributed with a mean of 4 and a standard

deviation of 3, what is the probability that 3 < X < 4?

6. Intersection and union of a set

Consider the sets (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) and (2, 3, 9, 10, 11).

1. What is the intersection of the sets?
2. What is the union of the sets?

7. Venn diagram problems

260 people were surveyed and asked whether they liked licorice, or chocolate, or both.
80 said they liked licorice, and 250 said they liked chocolate. How many people liked
both flavors?

8. Permutations

1. How many ways can the letters of the word TULIP be arranged?
2. How many ways can five people be arranged in a row of five chairs if one of the people
will not sit in the middle chair?

9. Combinations

A football team has 11 people on the field at one time. If their coach asks them to take a
square-dancing class, how many different pairs can the team form?

10. Basic probability
1. If I roll a six-sided die, what is the probability of rolling a one?
2. What is the probability of rolling a one, then rolling a two, then rolling a three, then
rolling a four, then rolling a 5, and then rolling a six?
3. What is the probability of rolling a six on one roll and not rolling a six on the next roll?

11. Either/or probability

1. A certain roulette wheel has 38 numbers: 1 through 38. What is the probability of
spinning the wheel twice and getting a 19 on one spin and an odd number on the
other spin?

2. What is the probability of rolling either a 4 or a 5 on one roll?

12. Probability word problems

1. An opaque jar contains 100 jellybeans: 93 red and 7 green. If, without looking, you
take 2 jellybeans out of the jar, what is the probability that both are red?

2. What is the probability that both are green?

13. Graph and chart questions

Active Users of Website A

2000 $1,000

1500 $750

1. In 2012, the number of users of Website A were what percent of the number of users
in 2015?

2. In 2014, the revenue for Website A was approximately what percent greater than in 2011?

1. Frequency: 26%

2. Mean, median, mode, and range

1. 24
2. 15
3. 12
4. 60

3. Quartiles and percentiles: quartile 2 and 3 cats

4. Standard deviation

1. The second list

2. 4

5. Normal distribution: Approximately 33.3%

Explanation: Since about 2/3 of the data will be within 1 standard deviation above or
below the mean for a normally distributed random variable, the answer is about 1/3,
or 33.3%, since the area under the curve between 3 and 4 shows everything within one
standard deviation below the mean.

6. Intersection and union of a set

1. (3, 9)
2. (1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11)

7. Venn diagram problems: 10

Explanation: It may be useful to draw a Venn diagram.

Both

Licorice Chocolate

L B C

In the diagram, L represents the people who only like licorice, B represents those who like
both flavors, and C represents the people who only like chocolate.
Since we have multiple unknowns, we need multiple equations to solve.
Equation 1: L + B = 80 (There are 80 total people who like licorice.)
Equation 2: C + B = 250 (250 people like chocolate.)
Equation 3: L + B + C = 260 (There are 260 people in total.)
Notice that in equation 3, we have a B + C. Looking at equation 2, we see that C + B
= 250. Replace the B + C in equation 3 with 250, and get equation 3: L + 250 = 260.
Subtracting 250 from both sides results in L = 10.
