Questions

Q1. Where should an object be placed in front of a concave mirror of focal length 15 cm to have
a magnification of 3 in case of
(a) real image.
(b) virtual image. (2)

Q2. Can a concave lens form an image of size three times than that of the object? Give reason.
(2)

Q3. Mohan uses a concave mirror as the rear view mirror for his car. Mention any two problems
that he is likely to face. (2)

Q4. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below: (3)
Power of a lens is defined as the ability of lens to bend the light. Power of convex lens is its
converging ability and power of a concave lens is its diverging ability. Convex lenses which
have short focal length bend the light rays through large angles, by focusing them closer to
the optical centre. Similarly, concave lenses which have very short focal length causes
higher divergence than the one with longer focal length.
(a) What is the SI unit of power of lens?
(b) How does the power of a lens change if its focal length is tripled?
(c) If power of a lens is positive, state whether it is convex or concave.

Q5. In each of the following cases, where must an object be placed in front of a convex lens so
that the image formed is (3)
(a) of same size as that of object.
(b) inverted and enlarged.
(c) upright and enlarged.

Q6. A 16 mm long awl pin is placed vertically in front of a concave mirror. Where must the awl
pin be placed in front of concave mirror so that a 8 mm long image of the awl pin is formed
at 36 cm in front of the mirror? (3)

Q7. Where must a box be placed in front of a convex lens of focal length 30 cm to obtain a real
and five times magnified image? Where will the image be formed? (5)

Q8. Label the given diagram in which, a ray of light is incident on a plane metal surface. Also
give the relationship between the angles i and r. (5)
