What is Intonation ?

Is the sound changes produced by the rise and fall of


the voice when speaking, especially when this has an
effect on the meaning of what is said.
Intonation is about how we say things, rather than
what we say, the way the voice and falls when
speaking, in other words the music of the language.
What is utterance ?

continuous piece of speech begining an ending with a


cleaur pause,
What is tone ?

a variation in the pitch of the voice while speaking,to


help distinguish words are used to differentiate one
word from another word
What is pitch ?

The high, medium and low sounds of our voice as we speako


What are the possible English tones?

RISING
FALLING

Falling intonation is the mos common intonation pattern in


English. It is commoly found in statements, comme¡ands, wh-
quiestions (information questions) confirmatory questionstags
and axclamations.

RISING

Rising intonation invites the speaker to continue talking. It is


normally used with ye/no questions, and question tags that
are real questions.

Rise-Fall

We use Rise-fall intonation for choices, lists, unifinished


thoughts and conditional sentences.

Fall- Rise
the voice falls and rises usually within one word .The main funtion of fall-rise
intionation is to show thth the speaker is not certain of the answer they are
giving to aquestion, or is reluctant to reply ( opposed to a falling tone used
ehen there is no hestitation). Itis also used is polite requests or suggestions.
