F0OD WEB
A food web or food cycle is a natural correlation of food chains and a graphical
representation. Usually an image what organisms eat in an ecological community,
another name for food web is consumption source system. The linkages in a food web
demonstrate the feeding paths such as from where organisms are obtaining food. The
food web is simple demonstration of different methods of feeding that links in an
ecosystem into a unified system of exchange. There are various sorts of feeding relations
that can be approximately split up into herbivory, carnivore, scavenging and parasitism.
The idea of trophic level was initiated during a historical landmark paper on trophic dynamics in
1942 by Raymond L. Lindeman
1. The autotrophs
2. The heterotrophs
To take care of their body, grow, develop to breed autotrophs produce organic matter and
organic substances including both minerals and gases like CO2 these chemical reactions
require energy which mainly comes from the sun and mostly from photosynthesis
although a very little amount takes place from hydrothermal vents and hot springs.
A gradient exist between trophic levels running from complete autotrophs that obtain
their source of CO2 from the atmosphere like carnivore plants that are autophytes that
partially obtain organic matters from sources other than the atmosphere.
Some of the organic matters are eaten by heterotrophs such as sugars provides energy.
Autotrophs and heterotrophs comes in all sizes from microscopic to many tones from
cyanobacteria to giant blue whales.
In reading we start the food web from bottom with the producers and energy flows with the
arrow directions from one organism to another.
