FINAL ASSIGNMENT
SPRING 2021
SET: 3(AII)

Please write your group name and the names and IDs of all your group
members on the first page of the assignment answer script. The last date of
submission is 26th May 2021 1159 pm or 27th May 2021 1159 pm, depending
on your set. Solve all problems.

You can only submit a PDF file - image or doc files won’t be accepted.
Before submitting the PDF, please rename the PDF file in the format -
SET_GROUPNAME. You MUST mention the names and IDs of all
your group members on the cover page. If you fail to do so, they
will not be given any marks.

Plagiarism will lead to an F grade in the course.

If you have any questions regarding the assignment and grading, please
contact AII on Slack.

5. (a) Find the Maclaurin series of f (x) = ex cos x.

(b) Suppose it is known that the population of a community is 20, 000 . Dur-
ing the beginning of the current COVID-19 pandemic (that is, at time
t = 0 ), it is reported that 50 people are carrying the disease (caused by
SARS-CoV-2 virus). The rate at which the virus spreads can be modeled
by the ordinary differential equation (ODE): I 0 = k (at + bt2 ) ; I (0) =
50 where I(t) denotes the number of infected individuals. Suppose the
model fits very well with the first 12 days’ infected data (see, Table 1) and
therefore the parameters are estimated as: k = 0.09, a = 100, b = −1. We
can apply this model to predict the number of individuals who will be-
come infected in near future. Such projections will help the community to
take the necessary measures so that the spread of the SERS-COV-2 virus
can be prevented or controlled. Now answer the following sub-questions:
(i) At the pandemic peak, the number of infected individuals will reach
to the maximum. So it’s important to predict the peak time (in days).
According to the model, when will the peak of the infection arise ?
(ii) Find the number of individuals of the community who is likely to
become infected at the pandemic peak if I(t) follows the cubic form:
3
c1 + c2 t2 + c3 t3 where c1 = 50, c2 = 92 and c3 = − 100 .
(iii) Identify the appropriate time (interval) after when the infection is
about to decrease.
