Introduction:
General Assembly
called the meeting and 42nd
resolution was passed in which it
decided to designate the 1990s
(1990 - 1999) as a international
Decade for Natural Disaster
Reduction.
Objectives:
The objective of the
International Decade for Natural Disaster
Reduction is to reduce, concerted
International action, especially in
developing countries, the loss of life,
property damage and social and economic
descriptions caused by natural disasters
such as earthquakes, wind storms,
tsunamis, floods, landslides, volcanic
eruptions, wild fires, grass hoper and locust
in festations, drought and desertification
Goals:
1. To improve the capacity of each
country to mitigate the effect of
natural disaster.
2. To devise appropriate guidelines and
strategies for applying existing
scientific and technical knowledge.
3. To false scientific and engineering
endeavors aimed at closing critical
gaps in knowledge in order to reduce
loss of life and property
4. To disseminate existing and new
technical information related
to measures for the assessment, prediction
and mitigation of Natural Disaster.
5. To develop measure for the assessment,
predictions and mitigation of Natural
Disaster.
Policy measures to be taken
at the National level :
All gogovernment are called upon:
• To formulate natural disaster mitigation
programs in developing countries.
• To participate during the decade in concerned
international action for the reduction of Natural
Disaster.
• To encourage their local administration to take
appropriate step to mobilize the necessary
support
• To keep secretary General informed of the
plans of their countries to United Nation then it
may become international centre for the
exchange of information.
• To take measures to increase public
awareness of damage risk probabilities.
• To improve the early international availability of
appropriate emergency supplies through the
storage or earmarking of such supplies in
disaster prone areas.
Review :
The economic and social council,
during its 2nd regular session of 1994, will carry
out a mid-term review of the implementation of
the International framework of action for the
International Decade for Natural Disaster
Reduction and report its findings to the General
Assembly.
