Notes
1. The calculated peak velocity pressure qp(z) is the wind pressure corresponding to the peak
wind velocity. In order to calculate the final wind actions on the structure (wind force or wind
pressure) the appropriate force coefficient or pressure coefficient depending on the type of
structure must be applied, as specified in EN1991-1-4 §5.2 and §5.3
2. The calculated wind action effects are characteristic values (unfactored). Appropriate load
factors should be applied for the relevant design situation. For ULS verifications the partial
load factor γQ = 1.50 is applicable for variable actions.

Calculation of peak velocity pressure (UK National Annex to EN1991-1-4)

Altitude correction factor

The effect of site altitude A = 50 m on the basic wind velocity is taken into account by the altitude
correction factor calt that is determined from equations (NA.2a) and (NA.2b) of UK National Annex to
EN1991-1-4:

calt = 1 + 0.001⋅A for z ≤ 10 m

calt = 1 + 0.001⋅A⋅(10m / z)0.2 for z > 10 m

https://eurocodeapplied.com/design/en1991/wind-peak-velocity-pressure-uk 2/5

where z is either the reference height zs as defined in EN1991-1-4 Figure 6.1 or the height of the part
above ground ze as defined in EN1991-1-4 Figure 7.4.
Smaller value of z yield more unfavorable
results.
In this calculation the height above ground is considered conservatively as 0.6⋅z.
Therefore:

calt = 1 + 0.001⋅50 m⋅[ 10m / max(0.6⋅6.000 m, 10m) ]0.2 = 1.050

Fundamental value of the basic wind velocity

The fundamental value of the basic wind velocity vb,0 is defined in EN1991-1-4 §4.2(1)P as the
characteristic 10 minutes mean wind velocity at 10 m above ground level.
It is determined from eq.
(NA.1) of UK National Annex to EN1991-1-4:

vb,0 = vb,map⋅calt = 23.00 m/s⋅1.050 = 24.15 m/s

where vb,map = 23.00 m/s is the value of the fundamental basic wind velocity before the altitude
correction is applied, that is given on the map in Figure NA.1 of UK National Annex to EN1991-1-4.

Basic wind velocity

The basic wind velocity vb is defined in EN1991-1-4 §4.2(2)P as a function of the wind direction and
time of year at 10 m above ground.
It is calculated as:

vb = cdir⋅cseason⋅vb,0

The directional factor cdir takes into account the directional variation of the wind intensity.
The
appropriate value of the directional factor cdir is provided in Table NA.1 of UK National Annex to
EN1991-1-4 as a function of the wind direction.
For the examined calculation the wind direction is
considered as 250°, measured clockwise from North.
The corresponding directional factor is
obtained with linear interpolation from Table NA.1 as cdir = 1.00.

The seasonal factor cseason represents the reduced wind intensity for structures that are loaded only
for particular periods of the year.
The appropriate value of the seasonal factor cseason is provided in
Table NA.2 of UK National Annex to EN1991-1-4.
For permanent structures that are loaded by the
wind throughout the year cseason = 1.0.
For the examined calculation the seasonal factor is
considered as cseason = 1.000,

Therefore basic wind velocity vb is calculated as:

vb = cdir⋅cseason⋅vb,0 = 1.00⋅1.000⋅24.15 m/s = 24.15 m/s

Orography factor
Where orography (e.g. hills, cliffs etc.) increases wind velocities by more than 5% the effects should
be taken into account using an orography factor c0(z) different than 1.0, as specified in EN1994-1-1
§4.3.3.
In general the effects of orography may be neglected when the average slope of the upwind
terrain is less than 3° up to a distance of 10 times the height of the isolated orographic feature.
The
recommended procedure in EN1994-1-1 §4.3.3 for calculation of the orography factor c0(z) is
described in EN1994-1-1 §A.3.

In the following calculations the orography factor is considered as c0(z) = 1.000.

Basic velocity pressure

The basic velocity pressure qb is the pressure corresponding to the wind momentum determined at
the basic wind velocity vb.
The basic velocity pressure is calculated according to the following
fundamental relation, as specified in EN1991-14 §4.5(1):

qb = (1/2) ⋅ ρ ⋅ vb2 = (1/2) ⋅ 1.226 kg/m3 ⋅ (24.15 m/s)2 = 0.358 kN/m2

where the density of the air is considered as ρ = 1.226 kg/m3 in accordance with the UK National
Annex to EN1991-1-4 §4.5(1).

Terrain Category

https://eurocodeapplied.com/design/en1991/wind-peak-velocity-pressure-uk 3/5
7/26/2021 Calculation of wind peak velocity pressure - UK National Annex

The terrain category is considered as "Country" when the site is not inside town terrain or the
upwind distance inside town terrain is dTown = 0.0 km < 0.1 km.

Roughness factor for sites in Country terrain

The roughness factor for sites in Country terrain cr(z) is obtained from Figure NA.3 of UK National
Annex to EN1991-1-4.
The value of cr(z) depends on the effective height above ground z - hdis and the
upwind distance to shoreline dShore.
For z - hdis = 6.000 m and dShore = 5.0 km the appropriate value is
obtained from Figure NA.3 with double logarithmic interpolation as cr(z) = 0.958.

Roughness correction factor for sites in Town terrain

For sites not inside Town terrain no correction to the roughness factor is applicable, i.e. cr,T = 1.000.

Turbulence intensity for sites in Country terrain

The turbulence intensity Iv(z)flat for sites in Country terrain without considering orographic effects is
obtained from Figure NA.5 of UK National Annex to EN1991-1-4.
The value of Iv(z)flat depends on the
effective height above ground z - hdis and the upwind distance to shoreline dShore.
For z - hdis = 6.000
m and dShore = 5.0 km the appropriate value is obtained from Figure NA.5 with double logarithmic
interpolation as Iv(z)flat = 0.184.

Turbulence correction factor for sites in Town terrain

For sites not inside Town terrain no correction to the turbulence is applicable, i.e. kI,T = 1.000.

Mean wind velocity

The mean wind velocity vm(z) at reference height z depends on the terrain roughness, terrain
orography and the basic wind velocity vb.
It is determined using EN1991-1-4 equation (4.3), including
the roughness correction factor cr,T for town terrain:

vm(z) = cr(z) ⋅ cr,T ⋅c0(z) ⋅ vb = 0.958 ⋅ 1.000 ⋅1.000 ⋅ 24.15 m/s = 23.12 m/s

Peak velocity pressure

The peak velocity pressure qp(z) at reference height z includes mean and short-term velocity
fluctuations.
It is determined according to equation (NA.4b) of UK National Annex to EN1991-1-4,
which is generally applicable:

qp(z) = (1 + 3.0⋅Iv(z) / c0(z))2 ⋅ (1/2) ⋅ ρ ⋅ vm(z)2 = (1 + 3.0⋅0.1837 / 1.000)2 ⋅ (1/2) ⋅ 1.226 kg/m3 ⋅ 23.12
m/s2

⇒ qp(z) = 0.789 kN/m2

where the density of the air is considered as ρ = 1.226 kg/m3 in accordance with the UK National
Annex to EN1991-1-4 §4.5(1).
Note that the value of the turbulence intesity Iv(z) is divided by the
orography factor c0(z) as specified in clause NA.2.16 of UK National Annex to EN1991-1-4 and also in
the flow charts in Annex A of UK National Annex to EN1991-1-4.
This takes into account that the
terrain orography affects the mean wind velocity component but not the short-term velocity
fluctuations due to turbulence.

Therefore the peak velocity pressure is calculated as qp(z) = 0.789 kN/m2.

Calculation of wind forces and pressures on the structure

The wind actions on the structure (forces and pressures) depend on qp(z) as follows.

Wind pressures on surfaces

The wind pressure on surfaces are derived from the calculated value of qp(z) = 0.789 kN/m2 by
application of the appropriate pressure coefficient, as specified in EN1991-1-4 §5.2.

For external surfaces the applicable wind pressure we is calculated as:

https://eurocodeapplied.com/design/en1991/wind-peak-velocity-pressure-uk 4/5
7/26/2021 Calculation of wind peak velocity pressure - UK National Annex

we = qp(z) ⋅ cpe

where cpe is the appropriate pressure coefficient for external pressure that is given in EN1991-1-4
Section 7 depending on the type of structure. The appropriate reference height z for the external
surface is given in EN1991-1-4 Section 7 depending on the type of structure.

For internal surfaces the applicable wind pressure wi is calculated as:

wi = qp(zi) ⋅ cpi

where cpi is the appropriate pressure coefficient for internal pressure that is given in EN1991-1-4
Section 7 depending on the type of structure. The appropriate reference height zi for the internal
surface is given in EN1991-1-4 Section 7 depending on the type of structure.

Total wind force on structure or structural element

The overall wind effect on the total structure or a particular structural element is expressed by the
total wind force Fw that is estimated by application of the appropriate force coefficient, as specified
in EN1991-1-4 §5.3.

Fw = cscd ⋅ cf ⋅ qp(z) ⋅ Aref

where:

The structural factor cscd takes into account the structure size effects from the non-
simultaneous occurrence of peak wind pressures on the surface and the dynamic effects from
the effect of structural vibrations due to turbulence.
The structural factor cscd is determined in
accordance with EN1991-1-4 Section 6 and the UK National Annex.

The force coefficient cf is given in EN1991-1-4 Sections 7 and 8 depending on the type of
structure or structural element.

The wind reference area Aref is given in EN1991-1-4 Sections 7 and 8 depending on the type of
structure or structural element. It is generally the projected area of the structure exposed to
wind loading.
