With the advent of the summer semester and having the opportunity to dive deeper into
the more complex concepts of medical dosimetry, I decided I wanted to become more involved
with the driving force behind the field, the American Association of Medical Dosimetrists
(AAMD). I was able to acquire a position on the communications committee and began
participating in the social media forums for the AAMD group. Now I must admit that I am not an
avid user of social media sites outside of LinkedIn, but luckily my wife was able to connect me
to the group on Facebook through her account since I haven’t had an account with Facebook
since high school, over fifteen years ago, and the website has changed drastically since I was a
member.
It has been a great experience thus far being able to get to know other
dosimetrists/students around the country that are involved with this committee. As a group, we
take on tasks like generating advertisements for upcoming events in the field of Dosimetry,
monthly and annual announcements, and coordinate future events to promote the profession. The
communications committee meets via phone conference on the first Wednesday of every month
to divide up who will post various details for future events or things to be celebrated by all
members of the profession, for example August 18th is National Medical Dosimetrists Day and
we will all be posting announcements for it.
Additionally, we all post different aspects of dosimetry news on our pages and AAMD
group pages along with the appropriate links to provide readers with more in-depth information
on the subject. For the month of July 2021, I shared the AAMD workforce study reports and job
outlook for the year, and for August I will be posting the abstracts for the next annual meeting. It
has been a privilege to become involved with the organization and give back to the professional
and educational organization that is shaping my career.
