Learning Activities in Module 4

For 4.1
Learning Activity
Perform as indicated:
1. Consider the experiment of tossing a fair coin three times. Let 𝐻 denote
head and 𝑇 denote tail. (Use a tree diagram to systematically list all possible
outcomes.)
a) Give the sample space.
b) Assign a priori probabilities to the sample points.
c) Find the probability of getting exactly one head.
Answer:

2.
Refer
to the
day of
birth
data in
the
first
example given under relative frequency probability. Assuming conditions are the
same today in the United States, estimate the probability that a baby will be born
during a weekday. That is, not on Saturday or Sunday.
Answer:

3. Based on your personal assessment, give the likelihood that you will get a
midterm grade of 2.0 in this course. Justify your answer.
Answer:
In my personal assessment, probably I will have a 0.5 or 50% that I will get a
midterm grade of 2.0 in this course. It is because the remaining percent belongs to
getting a grade of 1.0 (25%) and 3.0 (25%). A grade of 2.0 is in between 1.0 and 3.0,
so I will have more probability to have a grade of 2.0. But these are all possibilities,
it will still depends on the inputs I will give to the instructors for me to have a grade.
For 4.2
Perform as indicated.
1. A multiple-choice test is given consisting of 5 questions, each with 4 possible
answers of which only 1 is correct.
a) In how many different ways can a student answer the 5 questions?
(Hint: Answering such a test can be considered as performing a random
experiment in 5 stages: the first stage is answering the first question, the second
stage is answering the second question, and so on, down to the 5th stage of
answering the 5th question.)
b) In how many ways can a student answer all the 5 questions incorrectly?
(Hint: Use the same approach as in a).)
c) If a student is choosing the answers at random, what is the probability of
getting a score of 0 in this test? (Hint: Use the classical approach to assigning a
probability to an event. Make use of your answers in a) and b).)

Answer:
2. A manufacturer ships his product in lots of 20. In order to minimize the number
of defective items that the manufacturer ships to customers, he samples 6 items
from each lot and rejects the lot if there is at least one defective item in the sample.
If rejected, the manufacturer tests all of the products in the lot.
a) How many possible samples of size 6 can be selected if the manufacturer puts
back each item selected at random before the next random selection takes place
(simple random sampling with replacement)?(Hint: Selecting randomly with
replacement ensures that the lot size remains constant at each selection. This
random experiment involves 6 stages: the first stage is the selection of the first item
from 20 items; the second stage is the selection of the second item from 20 items;
and so on until the sixth stage which is the selection of the sixth item from 20
items.)
b) What is the probability that the lot will not be rejected if the whole lot actually
contains 5 defective items?(Hint: Let be the event that the lot will not be rejected
if the whole lot actually contains 5 defective items. This set contains all subsets or
samples of size 6 with no defective item. Now, the number of samples with no
defective item comes from the experiment involving two stages: the first stage is
selecting no item from the group of 5 defective items and the second stage is
selecting 6 items from the group of 15 nondefective items.)
c) What is the probability that the lot will not be rejected if the whole lot contains
only 1 defective item?(Hint: Let be the event that the lot will not be rejected if the
whole lot actually contains 1 defective item. This set contains all subsets or samples
of size 6 with no defective item. Now, the number of samples with no defective
item comes from the experiment involving two stages: the first stage is selecting
no item from the group of 1 defective item and the second stage is selecting 6 items
from the group of 19 nondefective items.)
