New HP UPD Features
Modified Scaling options with ability to anchor page

Starting with UPD 6.9.0, constraints between Print Document On and Scaling have
been decoupled/removed.
You can now scale the page by selecting Custom Scale even with Print document
on selected when printing 1-UP.
NOTE: Scaling Type and the ability to scale the page is not available when 2-UP (2
pages per sheet such as with booklet printing) is selected. In addition, scaling
Options are not available for 4-UP and more pages per sheet.
Scaling Options: Scaling Type – Selects the scaling type to apply to your document.
• No Scale – print your document on the selected paper size without resizing. If No Scale
is selected, then the document page images will not be scaled, and are instead centered
at full size on the target paper. If the document size is larger than the target paper size,
then the document image is clipped. If it is smaller, then it is centered within the target
paper.

Missing tabs, missing color & output settings, incorrect settings, communications errors

Issue:
• Job Storage, Output or Color Tabs missing in Missing tabs
printing preferences, missing color or output such as color

communications errors device
Root Cause:
• Bidi communications is disabled, print queue is not
connected to a valid port or device, or SNMP v1/v2 Missing color
is disabled settings
Solution:
• Create HP UPD printer object mapped to a
supported HP physical device via TCP/IP port with
SNMP enabled across the network & configured

Troubleshooting Tip
Dialog pops up first time user prints or opens printing preferences

Issue:
• The first time a user prints or opens
printing preferences, a dialog pops up
stating “Validating the selected
printer…”
• This only happens the first time.
Root Cause:
• As part of the initial configuration, HP
UPD Communicates (Bidi) with the
printer over SNMP v1/v2 to determine
the printer’s features and configure Prior to UPD 6.2, bidi communications occurred
the driver earlier in the install process. UPD 6.2 and later,
Solution: bidi communications occurs later in the install
• Normal operation, working as process – first time printing or opening printing
designed preferences or printer properties.

Troubleshooting Tip
Streaking or banding on printed output with photos (JPG images)

Issue:
• Streaking or banding on printed output with photos (JPG images) in Windows
8.1 and Windows 10 Photos App when double clicking on the jpg image file
and printing.
• No banding when printing the internal demo page
• Not reproducible in Windows Photo viewer (Right click on the file and select
Print) or in MS Paint (Right click on the file and select Edit).
Root Cause:
• Windows 8 Photos app is sending only one begin image. Whereas,
Windows 8.1 and above Photos app is sending multiple strips of the image
impacting HP EasyColor workflow.
Solution:
• Disable HP Easy Color
• Or, Enable HP EasyColor Conservative mode in the Advanced tab of the
driver (HP UPD 6.7.0 or later)

Troubleshooting tip
User prints but the job never reaches printer
Issue:
• User prints but the job never reaches the printer. The
print job is not listed in the print spooler window.
• The correct printer (ip address) is selected, the printer
is online, connected and in the Ready state
• “Start printing immediately” is selected and Job
Storage is disabled
• Closing and reopening the application and printing
again, the job still does not appear at printer
Root Cause:
• Server-less Job Accounting (SJA) is enabled and the
user is not correctly configured in EWS for Job
Accounting
Solution:
• Configure Device users, Device access, and local
quotas for selected user
• Or, disable Job Statistics and Local Quotas

Troubleshooting Tip
Poor print quality & missing features when configuring pull print queue with M880 or E87660
Issue:
• Using M880 to create pull print queues, HP E87660 C-Fold and Z-Fold options are missing & Print Quality
can’t be set to Professional/General Office for ink
• Using HP E87660, C- and Z-Fold are available but Fold and Stitch (Booklet) is not available on the M880 &
jobs printed to ink-based products result in poor quality (lines not sharp, text appears jagged)
• Using an HP PageWide to configure the queue with print quality defaulted to General Office, jobs printed to
an HP LaserJet appear grainy, colors do not match original (more faded, green tint), Excel/PDF color fills
shift outside cells.
Root Cause:
• The M880 used to configure the pull print queue was running FS 3.9 firmware (non-print capabilities mode)
• A common pull print queue was configured to print to both ink (PageWide) and HP LaserJet printers
Solution:
• Initially create a UPD printer object mapped to the physical device via TCP/IP port with SNMP enabled and
queue configured properly so that HP UPD Automatic Configuration runs correctly and configures the HP
UPD printer object
• Choose a HP UPD version that supports the latest printer model the customer is using, avoiding settings
specific to ink or laser (i.e. print quality)
• Choose a device model & common firmware version that supports the broadest set of features and
capabilities of device models deployed (FS 3 versus FS 4).
• For best performance, create separate queues for ink and Laser.

Troubleshooting Tip
Printing errors after upgrading driver Dynamic U/I
with Traditional
Issues: install
• Bidi and communications errors
• Missing tabs
• Mono on a color device
• Finishers and/or trays (input and output) Missing tabs
are missing such as color tab
• Scaling is not set to 100 on install, with color device
e.g. 0
• Printer requests special paper type or
manual feed when plain or unspecified
is selected.
• Random or Garbage print

Troubleshooting Tip
Printing errors after upgrading driver

Root Cause:
• Dirty system with outdated or no longer used
drivers, queues or ports
• The driver was upgraded using the “New Driver”
option on the Advanced tab of Printer Properties
• The queues or “3” directory was copied from one
system to another
Solution:
• Clean up the printing system, including deleting
unused queues and print drivers
• Delete the queue and re-install using the latest
print driver
• Or, use AutoUpgradeUPD to update queues

Troubleshooting Tip
Installing printer using Add Printer Wizard, printer is not found or error is displayed
Issue:
• Installing a printer on a Windows 10 PC using Add Printer Wizard, printer is not found in
Choose a device or printer to add to this PC dialog, or, if found, selecting it results in an
error message "Windows Cannot Connect to This Printer." If it installs, WSD port is
used
with a class driver, or installs incorrectly with the error "Driver is unavailable."
Root Cause:
• Issue may be due to security access rights to certain printers, AD Group policy
limitations on the number of printers to list, the network scanning option being disabled,
the printer not connected to the same network as the computer, or print sharing
disabled on the computer to which the printer is attached.
• The error "Driver is unavailable" may be due to the driver not installed in Driver Store or
Windows Driver Update being disabled.
Solution:
• Make sure the correct print driver is installed on the computer, the printer is on and
connected to the same network as the computer you want to add it to, and that print
sharing is enabled on the computer to which it's attached.
• For HP UPD, when the "Choose a device or printer to add to this PC" appears, select
"The printer that I want isn't listed," select "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or
hostname," set Device Type to TCP/IP Device, and uncheck "Query the printer and
automatically..." Then click Next, select the driver you want and complete the install
process.

Troubleshooting Tip
Installing a printer using Add Printer Wizard, incorrect driver is installed
Issue:
• Installing a printer on a Windows 10 PC using Add Printer Wizard,
selecting "The printer that I want isn't listed," and installing the printer
over TCP/IP using the wizard, the incorrect driver (such as a class
driver) is installed.
• The correct print driver is installed on the computer, the printer is on
and connected to the same network as the computer.
Root Cause:
• On the dialog for entering the IP address, “Query the printer and
automatically select the driver to use” is incorrectly checked.
Solution:
• For HP UPD, use the following steps to install over TCP/IP using
APW:
1. In the Devices and Printers dialog, select Add a printer
2. When "Choose a device or printer to add to this PC" appears,
select "The printer that I want isn't listed”
3. Select "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname"
4. Set Device Type to TCP/IP Device
5. Uncheck “Query the printer and automatically select the driver to
use” and enter a valid IP address or Hostname
6. Click Next, select the driver you want and complete the install
process.

Install drivers as downloaded from
Troubleshooting Tip hp.com, using only HP
Incorrect v4 driver is installed on client for Point and Print recommended tools to install &
configure.
Issue:
• Using a Windows Server 2016 print server, when downloading and configuring the queue using a vendor
specific v4 driver, client end users only get the “MS point and print driver” with limited functionality and
cannot print in color.
Root cause:
• Starting with v4 drivers, the distribution model on print servers changed. If a user connects to a v4 shared
printer queue, the corresponding v4 driver from local driver store on the client is installed or downloaded
from Windows update. If no driver is available, the “Microsoft enhanced Point and Print driver” is used,
which provides a standard interface with only limited features.
Solution:
• For v4 drivers, prior to connecting to the print server, install the vendor specific driver on the client.
• Alternatively, install the v3 HP UPD on the print server. When using the v3 HP UPD, the HP UPD is
downloaded to the client if it exists on the server or copied from Windows Update when the user connects
to the printer.
• With the HP v3 UPD, when using 32-bit clients, install the same version of both the 32-bit and 64-bit
"versioned" drivers on the server using the same driver name.
