MedYWat: Sustainable Blue Growth Innovation

Unique opportunity !
Blue Growth is the European Commission’s initiative → shared vision for Mediterranean
area to further “mindfully harness” the potential of the BLUEs (oceans, seas, coasts)

➢ The true potential of the ‘Blue Economy’, defined as all

the economic sectors which have a direct or indirect
link to the ocean, can only be realised if our ocean’s
health is secured.
➢ We need to restore, protect and sustainably manage
ocean assets in order to realise the ocean’s potential
to support human development into the future.

Study Case: Ballast Water Management !

When ballast water, collected in a certain geographic area

is discharged into a different area without being properly treated:
→ RISK of introduction of unwanted marine organisms!!!
The unwanted bacteria, viruses, algae and jellyfish can cause
considerable damage to the marine ecosystem and cataclysmic
impact on aquatic and human life!!
