There are many different kinds of sports that are undertaken by a wide variety of different

people. Some people do sport for their career and other people purely do sport for enjoyment and
recreation. Some sports, like cricket, require the use of a lot of equipment, while others need very
little in order to successfully play a game in that sport.  Some people use public playing fields to
play sport for free, while other sports such as squash, tennis, badminton and table tennis are
usually paid for on an hourly basis in the comfort of a local leisure centre.

Most sports are played with a round object often known as a ball. Some sports use more than one
ball and snooker is one of the unique sports that make use of a number of balls while being
played. The game itself is often controlled by an impartial individual known as an umpire in
cricket and a referee in sports like football and rugby. Most sports have a duration of not more
than a few hours, however some athletic tournaments can last for up to a week and a game of
cricket can be five days in duration before a winner is announced.

Some people prefer to watch sport. This can either be done by going to a stadium, a local leisure
centre, park or on the television. It is often cheaper to watch sport from the comfort of a person’s
home than to visit the stadium or a special event. Some sports, such as football and cricket, are
really popular in the United Kingdom but not in the USA. In the USA people often play
basketball and baseball. However, most countries put aside time to compete in world sporting
events such as the football world cup or the Olympics, which occur every four years.

The first tip for a good day of ice fishing is to wear the right clothes. You should dress in layers.
Wear 2 or 3 shirts, so you can take off a layer when you are warm. Wear a face mask, a warm
hat with ear flaps over your ears, and warm gloves and boots.
The second tip is to stay warm. Some people put up cloth tents when they go ice fishing. Some
people own small ice houses where they can stay warm. You can use a small heater inside the
tent or outside on the ice. Be sure to take a hot drink like hot chocolate. You should move around
to stay warm. Some people take ice skates.
The third tip is to check the ice. Look at it carefully. The ice must be 4 or more inches thick. This
is the ice rule: “Thick and blue, tried and true. Thin and crispy, way too risky.” Thick ice is safe
for ice fishing. Thin ice is dangerous.
The fourth tip is to take the right tools. You need to drill a hole in the ice with an ice drill. Then
make the hole bigger with a chopping tool, like an ax. You need to carry your bait in a bait
bucket. Use worms or small fish for bait. You need a chair to sit on. Take a folding chair so you
can carry it easily. Be sure to take your fish hooks and fishing rod! Pull all your tools on a sled.
Take your cell phone. You might need to call for help.
The fifth tip is to have a great time!
1) You need ear flaps over your ears to…

A. keep water out of your ears. C. keep your ears warm.

B. protect your ears from noise. D. Both A and B are correct.

2) You should move around to…

A. keep warm in the cold weather. C. scare the large animals away.
B. keep from falling in the water. D. make the fish come to you.

3) How should you check the ice?

A. Look at the ice carefully. C. Drill a hole in the ice.

B. Chop a hole in the ice. D. Skate on the ice.

4) What can you use for bait?

A. Hot chocolate C. Worms

B. Small fish D. Both B and C are correct.

5) How thick must the ice be?

A. 2 inches C. 4 inches
B. 3 inches D. 5 inches

Tennis is a sport played between two players (singles) or between two teams of
two players (doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket to strike a hollow rubber ball covered
with felt. To win, you must hit the ball into the opponent’s court without the opponent being able
to hit the ball back.
Tennis originated in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century. At first, people played tennis
on courts made of grass! These were called “lawn courts”. Now, tennis is played by millions of
people all over the world. The rules of tennis have changed very little since it was created in the
1890s.
Most tennis players play tennis because it is fun. It also is a good way to get exercise. While
playing tennis, you do a lot of running. You move your arms and legs in many ways that they do
not normally move.

1) What do you use to hit a tennis ball?

A. A bat C. A racket
B. A striker D. None of the above

2) _____ people can play tennis at once.

A. One C. Four
B. Two D. Both B and C

3) Where did tennis originate?

A. Australia C. The United States

B. Asia D. The United Kingdom

4) When did people start playing tennis?

A. The late 18th century. C. The late 1800s.

B. The late 19th century. D. Both B and C.

5) Why do most people play tennis?

A. Because it is fun. C. Because they don’t have a basketball.

B. Because they want to win. D. Both A and B

The Voyager 1 and 2 spacecrafts left Earth in 1977 on a five-year mission. Their mission was to
reach Jupiter and Saturn and send information back to earth about them. Jupiter and Saturn are the
largest planets in the solar system. In 1981, they finished their mission. But, they kept going. Scientists
decided to plan a longer trip for them: they would travel even further until they reached Uranus and
Neptune.
Voyagers 1 and 2 are very efficient. They were built with no moving parts. They use the breakdown,
or the decay, of the space element “plutonium” to create fuel. They can each get the equivalent of
30,000 miles per gallon of gasoline! They were made to be able to work in radioactive environments.
The “gas giants” – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune – are very radioactive places.
So far, Voyagers 1 and 2 have sent information back to Earth from farther away than any other
spacecraft. Scientists have learned about the atmospheres, interiors, and rings of the gas giant stars. They
have also learned about the moon of these stars. Scientists think that they will keep getting information
from Voyagers 1 and 2 until about 2020. At that time, the power on the Voyagers 1 and 2 will not be
strong enough to send information back to Earth.

B. Planets D. Information
2) The largest planets in the solar system…

A. are Neptune and Jupiter. C. are Jupiter and Saturn.

3) What do the spacecrafts use for fuel?

B. Gasoline D. Nitrogen
4) What happened in 1981?

A. The Voyagers started their mission. C. The Voyagers reached Jupiter and Saturn.
B. The Voyagers finished their mission. D. The Voyagers reached Uranus and Neptune.

5) Information from Voyager will come …

A. until 2010. B. until 2015.

C. until 2020. D. forever.
