The magnitude 7.

4 earthquake that struck Oaxaca, Mexico, last June 23, 2020, was one of the recent major
earthquakes that happened in the world. It was felt by an estimated 49 million people and caused widespread
destruction all over Oaxaca. It claimed the lives of ten individuals and injured twenty-three. It damaged several
buildings and infrastructures, including five hundred houses, giving families more things to worry about in this
pandemic, and three hospitals containing COVID-19 patients, further putting their health at risk. Along with these,
the people of Mexico also had to deal with the fear of aftershocks and a possible tsunami. We Filipinos also live with
this fear as our country is very prone to earthquakes with it belonging to the Pacific Ring of Fire. Learning about plate
tectonics and earthquakes helped me better understand how they happen and the possible dangers they bring. As an
Atenean who embodies the value of competence, this knowledge will help me efficiently respond to them to ensure my
family and I’s safety. This knowledge can also contribute to the understanding of scientists regarding earthquakes,
paving the way for advancements in dealing with them, and hopefully inventing something that could predict them. To
put it simply, learning about how and why tectonic plates move is essential as earthquakes happen every day around
the world; thus, we need to know what to do and continue to develop technologies to withstand them.
