You have chosen the University of Liege to
complete a part of your studies or you are
about to do so. Congratulations, thank you
and welcome.
As you will soon find out, Liege definitely
deserves its reputation as a "land of
hospitality". A cosmopolitan town with a
rich history, Liege has succeeded in
combining its Latin and German ancestry.
The present guidebook should help you in
your first contacts with Belgium and the
Liège area. It includes practical information
which should provide answers to questions
about accommodation, transport and
administrative steps, and we hope will make
it easier for you to find your place among
Liège students.
Throughout your visit among us, our team
will be available to help you so that your
visit to our university is as successful as

Our university is keen on offering the best to
international students and suggests several
events that should help them integrate and
collect information. It was twice rewarded in
this respect with the ECTS and DS labels
awarded by the European Commission. Such

The University of Liège is mainly located in and around Liège:
in the city centre and on a wooded hill some 10 km south of
the city called Sart Tilman. This guide develops information
about the Liège campuses.
It includes two other campuses:

ULg is one of the European universities that
was awarded those two labels. So far it is
the only university in Belgium that has both.
With the ECTS Label, the European
Commission acknowledges the quality of
services in the field of students’mobility.
The ULg relies on the ECTS and uses all
the related documents so as to ensure full
transparency of results and academic
recognition of study abroad periods.

French, Dutch and German are Belgium's
three official languages. An invisible
linguistic border divides the country roughly

German border. Brussels is an important
bilingual entity (French-Dutch), with a
French-speaking majority. Apart from a few
exceptions, the other regions are monolingual.
The climate
The climate may not be the reason why you
have chosen to study in Liège. Belgium is
known for its changing skies. The climate is
often unpredictable. The temperature may
vary widely from day to day. Winters are
usually mild, and summers usually quite
pleasant, if not hot.
Cost of living
To meet everyday living expenses a single
student should have at least 600 € per
month at his/her disposal. To this amount
he/she should add study-related costs
(books, etc.).

The University of Liège is a laureate of the
enlarged Erasmus university charter for
Lifelong Learning Programme for the years

study stays abroad.
It was awarded the ECTS label, which
sanctions the recognition of processes and of
the rights of students who chose to come to
Liège as part of a mobility agreement and
the DS label for the quality of information
provided on degrees awarded.

A balanced European university

The University curriculum
of Liège
In Belgium the university curriculum is based on
the European model.
It consists of 5 years (6 for veterinary medicine,
6 for medicine) divided into 2 cycles:
3 years to complete a Bachelor’s degree
(180 credits), and (in most cases) 2 more
years for a Master’s degree (120 credits).
Thanks to a combination of options, study
paths and modules, the University of Liège
offers every student the academic
development that fits best his or her
personal project.
Master's programmes can be adapted to the
student's professional goals thanks to a
variety of options, modules, and the chosen
approach (30 credits out of 120).
Exchange students are not bound to the
study paths offered. However, it is strongly
advised not to choose too widely divergent
courses in the Learning Agreement.
The Master’s degrees include various
approaches:
• The in-depth approach includes thorough
learning in a particular field and the
acquisition of the necessary methodology
to do research.
• The didactic approach includes the
acquisition of pedagogical skills needed to
teach in secondary schools in the French-
speaking part of Belgium.
• The specialised approach trains students
for a profession related to their course of
studies. After their Master’s degree «120»
our students can do an additional
Master’s degree or a third cycle (Doctor’s
degree – 180 credits).

of Liège The PhD course leads to the academic title
of doctor. It may only be read after a course
of at least 300 credits (bachelor's degree +
master's) and consists mainly in preparing
and presenting a thesis. The PhD course
includes a PhD training of 60 credits
completed by a research training certificate.
This training is linked to the specific skills
of the research teams and grants graduates
with high scientific and professional
qualifications.

20, with 10 out of 20 being the pass
threshold for individual courses, students
must reach an average mark of at least
12/20.
Exchange students have the results of the
examinations they took in Liège validated
by their home universities.
The "Communauté française de Belgique"
requirements to pass into the following
years are not applicable to them.
When you take an examination, remember
to tell your teacher or to write on your exam
paper that you are an exchange student;
mention the name of your ULg department
coordinator.
Marks received at ULg are transferred to the
student’s home university by the ULg
departmental coordinator and related to the
ECTS grading table and ECTS marks. The
table below was used in 2011-2012.

1 The ECTS system
The European Credits Transfer System is

field work, internships, and personal
research (whether at home or in libraries) as

also included. One credit is supposed to
correspond to about 30 hours of learning.
Work produced during one year amounts to
60 credits (so that as a rule one semester
amounts to 30 credits). The use of this
system makes transfers from
foreign institutions easier.
Students obtain credits after a successful
assessment of their knowledge and

The national airport Brussels Airport
(Zaventem) is located near Brussels. It is
possible to travel directly by rail from
Brussels to Liège (two trains per hour).

Accommodation
Private accommodation
First of all you should know that in Liège a
student's bedsit is called a "kot". There are
about 7,000 bedsits and studios in Liège.
What is a "kot" ?
It’s an individual room, generally furnished
and rented by the landlord. Usually there are
several kots in the same building. Students
share facilities such as toilets, bathroom and
kitchen. A room can also belong to the
landlord's house, and the student will then
share some facilities.
They can also choose fully independent
lodgings (studios, flats, or even houses).
The price for a furnished kot is around
300 €/month, additional costs not included.
There are two types of prices: those that
include the cost of electricity, heating and gas
and water, and those that don’t. The landlord
can also demand a monthly provision for
expenses with final settlement based on
meters at the end of the student’s stay. Make
sure that you take this into account when
comparing prices.
To have more choice and take time to
compare lodgings, we advise you to arrive in
Liège at least one or two weeks before the
beginning of classes. It is better to wait till
you are here to make a choice and to pay
nothing before you have seen the place. You
can also check whether the location of the

Renting a room costs about 11,90 €/day and
