MAPPING THE PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS

Problem: _________________________________________________________________________________________
Hypothesis: _______________________________________________________________________________________
Materials: coloring materials, pen, Periodic Table of Elements

Procedures:
A. On the blank Periodic Table, write the following using a broad pen/ pentel pen/ ball pen:
1. MODERN PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS in the upper middle part, as title
2. Element Symbol - middle part of each box
3. Element Name - below element symbol
4. Atomic Number - upper left corner of the element symbol/ box
5. Atomic weight/ mass (whole number) - upper right corner of the element symbol/ box
6. Paste your Modern Periodic Table of Elements at the back part of the paper folder you used in your ATOMIC
THEORY TIMELINE Project.
7. May now proceed to the next step, Procedure B.

B. Use your Periodic Table of Elements and crayons or colored pencils to identify and indicate the different parts of the
periodic table as instructed below:

I. Period/ Series- 7 horizontal rows which represents the main energy level. Color the border
Period 1- yellow orange Period 2- red violet Period 3- blue green Period 4- pink
Period 5- blue green Period 6- blue violet Period 7- yellow green

II. Group/ Family – Members of the families (vertical columns) in the periodic table have similar properties. The families
are labeled at the top of the columns in one of two ways: 1. The older method uses Roman numerals and letters. Many
chemists prefer and still use this method. 2. The newer method uses the numbers 1 through 18.

Group 1A: The Alkali Metals -Red

Group 2A: The Alkaline Earth Metals- blue
Group 3A: Boron group- yellow
Group 4A: Carbon Group- green
Group 5A: Nitrogen Group- violet
Group 6A: Oxygen Group (Chalcogens)- brown
Group 7A: The Halogens - purple
Group 8A: The Noble Gases- orange
Inner Transition Metal- gray
Lanthanide Series- white
Actinide Series- black

III- Elements in the periodic table are also grouped according to metals, non-metals and metalloids. Metals are lustrous,
malleable and ductile. They are good conductors of heat. Metals are found on the left side of the periodic table.

Nonmetals have a diverse set of properties. They are found on the upper right side of the periodic table. Metalloids or
semimetals possess the properties of both the metals and the non-metals.

Highlight the line that separates the metals from the nonmetals with black. Put an x in the metalloid element boxes.

D. Analysis
1. How elements are arranged in the Periodic table of Elements? _______________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________
2. Relate the group and period of a certain elements to its properties. ___________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________
