The contaminant is removed from the target item as a result of kinetic energy, thermal
differentials, and gaseous expansion. Upon impact with a solid surface, the dry ice pellets
sublimate to a gas and are evacuated through a high efficiency ventilation system. This leaves
only the contaminant to be disposed of as waste. The process can be gentle enough to clean
delicate electrical components or aggressive enough to remove bonded coatings.

Cleaning of HRSG boiler tubes remains one of our most popular services. The removal of debris
from between the tube fins significantly improves heat transfer while lowering exhaust back-
pressure.
The increased efficiency can often pay for the cleaning cost in two to four weeks.
Abrasion is a concern of industries that utilize printing presses, mixing vessels and metal
scalping/cutting machines. With cryogenic cleaning, abrasion is not a concern. While CO2
cleaning can be non-abrasive that isn’t to say it isn’t capable of removing paint or coatings, if the
need arises. Higher pressures will provide the probability of attaining the requirements of
Surface Preparations Specification No. 7 issued by the Steel Structures Painting Council for
Brush Off Blast Cleaning.
Plastic injection molds can be cryogenically cleaned in place, thereby eliminating the need to
dismantle them. This can save as much as 85% in down-time.
A few other industrial applications IceSolv has performed include printing presses, rolling
presses, piping, tanks, vessels, process lines, pulp and paper machines, turbine blades and casings.
Nuclear Decontamination
IceSolv has been contracted by many utilities at the end of their outage to remove loose surface
contamination from tools and equipment. Radiological “Free Release” has been obtained on tools
that hand-wiping could not. CO2 will not damage sensitive equipment or tools, saving the utility
money. We have contracted with facilities such as Hope Creek, Comanche Peak, Grand Gulf,
Millstone, Pilgrim, Maine, Nine Mile Point, Fitzpatrick, Indian Point, Peach Bottom,
Susquehanna, Beaver Valley, Braidwood, Zion, Big Rock Point, Palisades, Trojan, San Onofre,
Waterford, Arkansas Nuclear One, Oconee, Byron, Oyster Creek, Salem, Duane Arnold, South
Texas Project, Q-Cep Facility, MolyCorp, Ronson Metals, S.L.A.P.S, Waltz Mill, Calvert Cliffs,

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
for
DRY ICE BLAST CLEANING SERVICES
The dry ice blast cleaning process offered by IceSolv significantly differs from other
techniques available on the commercial market today.
The disposal of cleaning residues such as grit (sand), glass or plastic beads, water or crushed
walnut shells is becoming increasingly difficult due to stringent landfill disposal requirements and
mixed/hazardous waste controls. For example, the removal of lead based paint from a one square
foot area may require as much as ten pounds of sand to remove as little as two ounces of paint.
This results in over ten pounds of lead contaminated waste requiring controlled disposal. When
one of the above materials are utilized in the removal of radioactive contamination from surfaces,
relatively large amounts of blasting agents may be required to remove microscopic amounts of
radioactive material resulting in significant disposal costs. As can be seen, the largest percentage
of waste to be disposed of consists of the blasting media. Utilizing CO2 pellets as the blasting
media eliminates the high follow-up costs of waste disposal while maintaining the advantage of
mechanically removing contaminants from surfaces.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Several pieces of equipment comprise the operating system. Several options are available.
Blasting Unit
The IceSolv blasting unit acts as the delivery mechanism for the dry ice pellets to the blast nozzle.
IceSolv units are pneumatically operated. A mechanical and pressure interlock system results in
a lack of complicated electronic controls. IceSolv units have operated with essentially 100%
availability factor in supporting IceSolv’s on-site services.
The unit is also highly portable. This portability is one of the major advantages of the IceSolv
unit over competing technologies. The system does not require permanent installation thereby
allowing its use anywhere within a plant.
The basic CO2 unit operates at 200 cfm and 100 to 250 psig. If nitrogen is the blast pressure
supply of choice, nitrogen usage will run at 100 gph per machine. With the correct supply set up,
nitrogen can deliver 300 psig for tougher surfaces.

THEORY OF OPERATION
The Dry Ice Blasting process utilizes pellets of dry ice (CO 2 ) propelled by compressed air or
nitrogen gas at a surface to be cleaned. The process works through a three-fold operation that
includes:
Mechanical Abrasion
The velocity of the mass impacting on the surface, along with the mass of the dry ice itself,
transfers energy to the surface being cleaned. This process removes material much the same as
traditional sandblasting and liquid abrasive technologies. The major difference between this and
traditional blasting technologies is that the process results in virtually no media disposal. The
process is also non-abrasive and will not damage critical components or plant structures.
Thermal Differentials
When the pellets of dry ice, along with the motive forces impact on the substrate, a temperature
differential is established between the substrate and the coating/contaminant. Each surface
exhibits a specific rate at which they will accept the BTU’s via the cleaning media. This
establishes a thermal differential between the substrate and the contaminant or coating and aids in
the removal process.
Reverse Fracturing
This process is one by which liquid and gas molecules of carbon dioxide, and the motive agent,
enter through the pore spaces of the substrate. As the molecules warm up, they will push the
contamination/coating from underneath, further assisting the removal process.
EQUIPMENT FEATURES
Energy Requirements
No power supplies are required for the Cryogenic Cleaning process. An air compressor is used as
the propellant and control power for the system. An air-drying system can be used along with the
air compressor to eliminate condensation, however, the drying system does require 120 volt, 20
amp service. A single 1-inch hose conveys the compressed air from the compressor to the hopper
or blast unit.
Portability
The unit IceSolv uses is easily transportable. Areas considered a problem for the majority of
cleaning methods are no longer a problem when cleaned using CO2. This portability is evidenced
by operations performed at major nuclear customer locations. For example: A plant problem
required that our system be moved within the plant to support work on the turbine deck from its
location in another area of the plant. The system was moved and we supported the turbine work
in a timely fashion. This portability is not available with other technologies.
The caster mounted system occupies a footprint of 2 feet by 3 feet with an overall height of less
than 3 1/2 feet. Weighing less than 300 pounds, the hopper or blast unit may be easily moved
from one area to another. It’s overall size and castor mounting, allows its transport in personnel
elevators and through standard doorways.

Flexibility
Pellets are manufactured off site at specific densities, based on cleaning requirements. They are
delivered to the site in accordance with an agreed upon schedule which is based on usage.
Densities ranging from 45 and 85 lb./ft3 can be supplied on a controlled basis, depending on the
aggressiveness required for the decontamination effort. Pellet flow rates, and propellant supply
pressure are adjustable from the control panel. The skid can support over 50 feet of hose between
the skid and the nozzle in most instances.
Simplicity
The IceSolv unit uses no outside power sources and operates totally pneumatically. This
simplicity has resulted in a 100% availability factor on most of our projects. The dry ice pellets
are propelled by either compressed air or nitrogen gas.
Cost Effective
IceSolv units may require similar initial investments as other style units; however, ongoing
maintenance costs and downtime are negligible. When all facts are considered, the IceSolv
system results in a system with more features, less maintenance and reduced long-term
investment than competing systems. The end result is lower operating costs, which IceSolv can
pass through to our customers with lower service rates.
Benefits
Non-conductive
The system may be used in the cleaning and surface preparation of energized electric
components.
Non-abrasive
The CO2 pellets are totally non-abrasive and may be used in applications inappropriate
for sand or other abrasive blasting agents.
Non-Toxic
The system uses food grade carbon dioxide, making it suitable for the cleaning of bakery
items or other surfaces where external contamination is of concern.
Non-hazardous
Carbon dioxide is non-flammable making the process safe to use in environments where
the introduction of air may result in an explosive/flammable atmosphere.
Completely Dry
Carbon dioxide is completely dry and free of moisture, therefore making the process safe
to use in environments where the introduction of moisture is prohibited.
Non-Waste Generating
The only resultant residue requiring disposal processing of the cleaning process is the
removed contaminant itself.
Environmentally Safe
Carbon dioxide occurs naturally. The dispersal of this gas into the atmosphere poses no
danger to the environment. When combined with the fact that the process generates no
extra waste requiring landfill or controlled disposal, the process is “Environmentally
Friendly”.

The following are responses to the most commonly asked questions regarding the dry ice blast
cleaning technology. These are not intended to be answers for all situations and circumstances,
however; they provide an overall general response to most concerns and questions.
Q: Under what circumstances should a company consider utilizing the nitrogen propellant
versus an air compressor as the propellant?
A: Some electrical situations may require nitrogen in order to minimize any possibility of
moisture reaching your electrical systems. Also, some state or municipality codes restrict the use
of diesel compressors due to decibel or exhaust emission levels exceeding their legal limits.
IceSolv’s experienced representatives can assist you with these questions.
Q: The access to my plant is extremely limited. How far away from the work areas can you
stage the compressor?
A: We normally try to keep the hose run at 300 feet or less, but under extreme conditions we are
capable of running the hose up to 700 or 800 feet. These longer distances require a nitrogen
system in order to maintain adequate pressure and volume.
Q: I’m really sold on your process but I am concerned that the mobilization costs to my remote
location will make dry ice blasting cost prohibitive.
A: With IceSolv’s various locations and established national vendor system, the pricing for
similar projects varies only 10% to 15% across the country.
Q: My customer has never heard of this process. Can you provide references that have similar
requirements?
A: IceSolv has an extensive database of customers and the various applications we have utilized.
We can supply a customized list based on any criteria your customer may request to see.

IceSolv offers a low dust, abrasive blast cleaning process for those situations requiring more
aggressive blast cleaning. Using a SoftBlast media with bonded abrasives, this process is tailored
to specific cleaning applications. Levels of aggressiveness vary from simple degreasing to “white
metal” profiling.
Operation
The Soft Blast media process operates similarly to other abrasive blasting equipment. The media
is propelled at the surface to be cleaned. This is the only similarity between the SoftBlast process
and conventional abrasive blasting. Flow rate of the Soft Blast media is positively controlled.
The capacity of the pressure vessel allows an average continuous blast time of thirty minutes,
depending upon the type of media and flow settings. The actuator operates in such a manner that
the media does not “bridge” or clog, assuring a smooth and continuous flow of media. The feed
auger provides positive control of the amount of SoftBlast media entering the blast air stream. In
conventional blasting equipment, gravity “feeds” the media into the air stream. Auger speed is
operator controlled making infinite control of the SoftBlast media feed rate possible, therefore
resulting in consistent media delivered to the blast nozzle.
SoftBlast Media
Physical characteristics of the SoftBlast
media make this an ideal process for a
production environment requiring
abrasive blasting. Manufactured from
synthetic open-cell polymer sponge, the
resulting media is best described as
“entrapping”. The media absorbs and
traps contaminants, such as grease, oil
and dirt, while removing them from the
substrate.
Brown sponge, which leaves a profile of 1 to 2 mils, is commonly used for preparing metal
surfaces that are only lightly rusted. Restoration of items that have experienced fire and soot
damage and removal of baked on contaminants from food processing equipment are more
examples of the capabilities of brown sponge media.
White, blue, and green are other sponge medias available that offer non-profiling cleaning.
Common uses for these sponge types are grease removal, oil cleanup, and surface coating
removal.

Cleaning with high pressure water is one of the oldest forms of industrial cleaning. Often referred
to as the “universal solvent”, IceSolv personnel have utilized high pressure and ultra-high
pressure water blasting in supporting commercial nuclear power customers since our inception.
IceSolv has established a reputation for providing quality services, at a competitive cost, to meet
today’s stringent environmental requirements. No matter what the water blasting requirement,
IceSolv offers a process that meets your needs at a price you can afford.
Pressure Washing
Pressure washing systems allow efficient
cleanup of many items without damage and
with minimal waste generation. IceSolv
Pressure Wash Services (pressures up to 4,
500 psi) use either conventional cold-water
units or high efficiency hot water units.
Several uses for this process include loose
paint removal, tank flushing, algae removal
and contamination removal.
High Pressure Water Blasting
Some tightly adhered contamination may
be removed with high pressure water blasting. IceSolv water blasting specialists have extensive
experience and certification in the safe utilization of high-pressure equipment. At pressures of up
to 20,000 psi, our High Pressure Water Blast services are typically used for floor drain lancing,
tank and sump cleaning, heat exchanger/boiler tube flex lancing, and source-term reduction.
Ultra-High Pressure Water Blasting
Ultra-high Pressure Water Blasting is effective on surfaces where contamination is tightly
adhered. At pressures of up to 40,000 psi our Ultra-High Pressure Services effectively cut or
remove contaminants that cannot be removed by any other means. Several uses for the Ultra-
High Pressure Service are concrete and metal cutting, rust and bonded coatings removal, surface
cleaning and preparation.

Corn Cob, a long time staple of motor cleaning prior to the introduction of dry ice blasting, has
developed other valuable uses. Corn Cob has a solid property that is resilient upon impact. It
works well for cleaning contaminants such as ink spills or soot without damaging the surface
underneath. We often use corncob in circumstances where containment and re-use is not a
concern.
Baking Soda
The involvement of baking soda as a blasting media has developed over the last five or six years.
Due to its granular make up it can be used in a wet or dry blast application. Since baking soda
breaks down on impact it is a one-time use media. Baking soda’s main advantage is in its
strength. It is tough enough to remove hard contaminants without abrading many surfaces.
IceSolv cleaned the residue of bulletproof glass from an injection mold without any abrasion to
the mold itself. Baking soda’s polishing action on metal surfaces makes it a good choice for
cleaning embossed rollers that are used in printing presses and plastic texturing machines.
Trona
Sodium Sesquicarbonate, or the more commonly known Trona, is a hard granular media that is
refined from Trona rock. Trona closely resembles sand but is less hard and breaks down upon
impact. While Trona can be blasted dry providing a 1 mil profile, it is most often injected into a
water blast that increases the cutting ability of the blast. Due to the breakdown of the media,
approximately 50% dissolves upon impact. Another 20% will eventually dissolve on the ground
with the water washing over it leaving only 30% to be disposed of at the end of the job. Trona,
therefore, is considered a single use media.

Lead-Based Paint
IceSolv specializes in the removal of lead-based paints from tanks, towers, structural steel and
masonry. IceSolv has removed lead-based paint from several different facilities/industries
throughout the country.
Utilizing IceSolv to prep with a variety of media, and then followed by IceSolv painting
minimizes the use of two contractors, which in turn saves money for the customer. Therefore,
there is no re-prepping required or no downtime for a change of contractors. IceSolv will utilize
the same crew for the prep and painting requirements.
