Case Study – Globalization: The example of Dubai

1. Describe the geographical location of Dubai.

Dubai is part of United Arab Emirates with a total area of 3885 square kilometers. It has
also a shoreline of 72 kilometers along the Persian Gulf. Majority of its land area is a
desert along with other neighboring Middle East countries. Dubai has a subtropical desert
climate wherein almost no rain between May and November. Average rainfall is only 5
days a year.

2. List some of the important facts that have helped Dubai become so “successful”.

a) It has a very successful tourism economy.

b) It has a number of free-trade zones.
c) It has a secure environment.
d) It has a bold political and economic leadership.
e) It has the ability to attract attention by building an extravagant ultra-modern city.
f) It has the ability to attract enormous amount of foreign investment because of
political security and stability.

3. How has tourism helped the economy of Dubai?

Tourism in general opens a lot of job and investment opportunities for a country. It shows
foreigners or investors the ability of a country to provide them potential profits. Tourism
based economy of Dubai is very successful that it opens it to enormous foreign
investments and expansions. Dubai made sure that people wants to visit the country and
that they are building enough infrastructures to accommodate all their visitors.

Building enough infrastructures like championship golf courses, water ski parks, the
world’s tallest building, the world’s only 7 star hotel is keeping Dubai’s tourism-based
economy to infinite prosperity.

4. Describe how the business world is treating the success of Dubai.

The business world is already fascinated by the economic surge of Dubai. Foreign
businesses considers Dubai as the center for trade and investment in all of Middle East.
Foreign operations of different Multinational corporations are now having operations in
Dubai. Its business district has attracted some of the biggest companies such as IBM,
Microsoft and Oracle. Dubai is also the home of stock exchange and hosts the head
offices of several banks and other international corporations.

5. What role has tolerance played in the success of Dubai?

Tolerance is defined as the capacity to endure pain or hardship or the act of allowing
something. Dubai’s interpretation on these two definitions played a critical role in its
success. Before it welcomes an enormous foreign investment and a very successful
tourism economy, the rulers of Dubai have skillfully plotted the course that led to
Dubai’s role as a globalized center of business and tourism. The city is now looking into
a balance between the modernized practices and preserving its initially conservative
Islamic culture.

6. How is Dubai “building new land” in the Persian Gulf affecting development? Give
2 examples

As I already mentioned, one of the most important reasons for Dubai’s growth is its
ability to attract attention. And this has been achieved by building The Palm Islands and
The World along the Persian Gulf. Building these two massive and ultra-modern
infrastructures generated additional jobs in the tourism and construction industry. It also
gave tourist another reason to visit and experience Dubai. These infrastructures caught
the attention of the whole world making every traveler and every soul on earth to dream
and actually plan of visiting the city.

7. What are some of the negative reactions to globalization?

Within Dubai, there have been ongoing concerns about bringing the moral laxity of the
Western World into what had initially been a conservative Islamic society. Some people
in UAE is not comfortable with the compromises that have been made to attract tourism
and international business. Other negative reaction to globalization is that the world is
more susceptible to terrorism since it opens a lot of ports to conduct businesses.

8. Do you feel that globalization will be responsible for helping increase wealth to all
people, or will it create a homogenized (blended into one) American style culture?
Explain your answer

I believe that globalization in general is helping increase wealth to all people. Regarding
the issues on culture, it is indeed creating a homogenized American style but it is up to
the level of tolerance a country is committing to whether preserve its own traditional
cultures. Just keep in mind that globalization offers opportunities to nations that are still
developing
