 What are different options that Sonia`s mother should consider and what are the pros & cons of each?
PLAN A: She can consider to re-marry and put Sonia
into a foster care or adoptive policy.
PROS
• The woman will be mentally free of personal guilt that she has not
been able to provide for her child.
• Since she is just at the age of 22, she can rebuild her life.
• Since she cannot afford to take care of Sonia`s needs, there can
be a possibility that Sonia can get access to much better
healthcare that her mother could have provided.
CONS
• She might suffer from separation anxiety due to renouncement of
her motherhood.
• She can be ill-treated by her new husband.
• Sonia`s health deteriorates even more as NGO/ foster parents do
not care much about her health.
PLAN B: She can choose to stand on her own feet and
earn enough to sustain her livelihood.
PROS
• While Sonia`s mother will struggle to earn money in initial years, the
brunt will prepare her to provide for her and her family needs in the
long term.
• She will remain united with her daughter, Sonia.
• It will inculcate a sense of integrity and self-esteem.
CONS
• She might fail at earning a livelihood for herself.
• Sonia might not get proper health care that she requires.
• Ultimately, they remain in the vicious cycle of poverty.
What short-term help and support can be provided for Sonia and her mother? What can be a means to
developing a long-term care system for Sonia and her mother?

She can choose to put the child in foster care or adoptive service for some time so that she can start
earning a living herself while her daughter can get the health-care that she requires through her foster
parents & NGO.

1.There are other children like Sonia in her village who are partially or fully orphaned. Brainstorm and
propose programs of care & rehabilitation for these children that can be undertaken individually and
on a policy level.

1.GOI is giving out funds and sheltering kids who have lost one of their parents or have been fully
orphaned due to COVID. The next legal kin can enroll the child into the scheme and take the benefit of
this government program.

2. With the help of government aided funds and relatives, the child can once again find his stance. No
one can fill in the shoes of the parents but the child can find a new family with relatives and the govt
funds will help the child to pursue education w/o any obstacles. Moreover, these funds will act as a
catalyst for relatives not to feel any financial burden on their shoulders for the newly orphaned children.
