1. How does culture influence elderly abandonment?

Culture is a way of life for us. It includes our values, beliefs, practices, languages, and
traditions. In our culture or even in other places, we have accustomed that our father and
mother have been our companions in life since childhood and we cannot avoid the day when we
will be responsible for them as well. But, as in the video I watched, many of us are increasingly
or normalizing abandoning our elderly parents and one of the most typical reasons is that they
already have a family of their own to raise or believes that he or she is lacks for resources to
look after the victim. I remember what Lolo Tony said in Failon Ngayon “Sana hindi, mangyari
sa mga anak ko ang ginawa nila saakin”. As a family-oriented person, I feel hurt and guilt
because he doesn't deserve what happened to him and I can't believe that there are those
individuals who can abandon their parents after nurturing them. Lastly, I conclude, we should
not normalize abandoning our elderly because it causes a serious problem to them.

2. Is elderly abandonment a sociocultural issue?

For me, elderly abandonment is considered as a sociocultural issue because it mentioned

in the video that the number of seniors who are abandoned is continuously increasing year by
year. According to Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) as of the year 2015 we have a total of
7.5 M population of the elderly on DSWD and there is a possibility that it increases up to 14 M
by the year 20320. The reason for this is because of financial constraints, attitudes about
disease, expectations and perceived roles, and a grasp of society's concept of elders. It also
mentioned in the video that there is only one houseparent in twenty-five senior which is
underman because basically each parent should only care for three to four senior which resulted
now for not being able to meet the other needs of seniors.

3. Analyze your own background. Where might you have learned those values?

My culture comes from where I am from and where I was raised. I am a Filipino. My
parents raised me with a lot of beliefs that have had an effect on who I am today. These are
beliefs that don’t just belong to my culture, but they come straight from the values of my family.
One of the most well-known beliefs I have is respect for elders, not because it is a tradition, but
because of the concept in Good Karma. "Treat others the way you want to be treated." I have
been raised also to be non-violent and to practice peace. I was raised to believe that through
hard work I could become successful and have a good life. Lastly, I believe that if you are a
good person to others you will be rewarded for it in many intangible ways.

4. What judgments might you make about this patient and family? What words might you
use to describe their attitude and/or behavior?

I felt different emotions after watching the two videos. I'm happy because the others are
already happy with home care; they are free to do anything they want, and if I'm not mistaken,
they can further develop their abilities by making keychains, coin purses, pot holders, and other
crafts. Otherwise, I’m saddened because one of them stated that, despite of his happiness with
where he is right now, he can't forget what his children did to him, especially since he gave and
sacrifices everything for their sake. Meanwhile, I describe the family who abandoned their
parents to be selfish and injustice because abandoning your parents who are no longer able to
live on their own can have a negative impact on them, particularly their mental health. They
never stop questioning why they left or whether they did something wrong to cause this to
happen to them and for me they don’t deserve this confusion.

5. As the nurse who does health assessments for frail older adults who attend a community
comprehensive day program, what information should the nurse assess to identify
culturally appropriate care plans or service delivery plans for older Filipino clients?

During the assessment phase, the nurse should make an effort to learn more about the
clients' cultures. We Filipinos have a lot in common, but we also have a lot of differences. In
addition, this situation necessitates the provision of individualized care. As a result, the nurse
should begin by examining how the culture and its characteristics influence attitudes,
perceptions, values, and experiences with health-related concerns. The nurse must analyze the
client's beliefs about wellbeing, disease, and how to overcome it as a result of this. It's also
critical to comprehend the clients' religious beliefs and how they relate to their health. In
addition, the nurse must assess the client's dietary requirements. This will ensure that there is a
development of a culturally appropriate care plan or service for each patient.
