IN EVERY DEVELOPMENT THERE IS ALWAYS A CORRESPONDING ADVERSE

EFFECT

Globalization has been very effective in the Philippines. It brings benefit that are very
useful to our daily lives – such as easy access to information, the variety of technologies, high
levels of education, export-oriented agricultural sector that has generated more than sufficient
foreign exchange and because of the industrial sector growth, the Philippines has one of the
highest per capita incomes in Southeast Asia. Even though these development makes our lives
better and easier, it could also bring complications and effect to our society especially in our
environment, it becomes bigger and bigger problems and one of the problem is climate change.
The Philippines is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including sea level rise,
increased frequency of extreme weather events, rising temperatures and extreme rainfall. This is
due to its high exposure to natural hazards (cyclones, landslides, floods, droughts), dependence
on climate-sensitive natural resources and vast coastlines where all major cities and the majority
of the population reside. And one of the recent event the Philippines experienced is the 3
consecutive typhoons that caused a great havoc. In the midst of Typhoon Ulysses, there was a
release of water from the Magat Dam, the dam opened seven gates and was released 6,706 cubic
meters of water per second at maximum discharge that causes the Bicol and Central Luzon a
catastrophic flooding. The authorities also look for the other possible cause of this catastrophic
flooding which are the illegal logging and mining in the area. In the past decades, people
believed that global warming was just a joke. Countless people did not realize that nature will
always find a way to reciprocate what we humans did to our mother nature. As we noticed, the
world is getting hotter. It means that our ozone layer has been damaged. The icebergs are slowly
melting which causes the rise of the sea level. According to a DOST website, the most recent
scientific assessments have confirmed that this warming of the climate system since the mid-20th
century is most likely to be due to human activities; and thus, is due to the observed increase in
greenhouse gas concentrations from human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels and land
use change. The politicians have been coordinating with the scientists and engineers to come up
with a plan to completely recover our planet. Thus, investing money on useful research.

Cagayan de Oro City, the golden city of friendship, have been dealing about the flooding
problems in certain areas. Due to the urbanization of the city, it became crowded. A great
number of infrastructures have currently building and others have already made blueprints on
how they want it to be. So there will be conflict on the drainage system because of ongoing
process of the construction. As we noticed during heavy rain or typhoon, streets are flooded.
Another reason of the flooding is because of the undisciplined act of the citizens throwing
garbage anywhere. Cagayan de Oro, a fast growing city in the Philippines, used to be criticized
for its poor waste disposal system and lack of sanitation facilities. So, the City Local
Environmental and Natural Resource Office (CLENRO) prepared a 10-year solid waste
management plan based on the PPS amounting to a required investment of PHP 1.7 billion ($34
million).
To conclude, the citizens of the Philippines should cooperate to the plan or solution of the
government. This may help us battle against natural disasters.
