Anemia is a global public health
problem!

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was

considered to be the most important
contributing factors to the global
burden of disease.
(WHO, 2002)

It is estimated that 41.8% of pregnant

women worldwide are anemic.

At least half of this anemia burden is

assumed to be due to iron deficiency.
(WHO Guideline on Intermittent Iron and Folic Acid
Supplementation in Non-anemic Women, 2012)

SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH SERVICES 2019

Why do we want to prevent
IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA?
Iron is needed for:
• Formation of hemoglobin in
RBCs
• Transport of oxygen in the body
• Production of energy
• Function of the immune system
• Normal cognitive function
• Reduction of tiredness and
fatigue
Poor cognitive performance,
behavior, and physical growth of
infants, preschool and school-aged
children.

Weak immune status and morbidity

from infections of all age groups.

SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH SERVICES 2019

Decrease global burden
of vaccine preventable
diseases.

Protection from primary

dose declines over time.

Thus, there is a need for

booster doses to
maintain high level of
protection.
