Class / Age: 4 C/ 10 years old/ 16 students Level: YLE (Flyers) School status: primary/ 5 classes per week/ English primary curriculum Learner profile: The fourth grade is currently preparing for the Flyers exam which will take place on the 23rd of May. In parallel, they have been following the English Primary curriculum for stage 5. We are now at the end of chapter- A Box of Delights, in which they found out that the well-know fairytales they have read also have different versions in different countries. They were also taught the past tense and writing a short story based on pictures. Info about the lesson Title, topic: Fairytales- Beauty and the Beast [Type of lesson]: REVISION/ Reading and Writing Aims: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: -read different narrative texts and identify the stages of a plot; (A1) -use the past tense correctly; (A2) -write short texts based on given pictures; (Flyers-Reading& Writing, part 7) (A3) Objectives: -find out different versions of the same fairytale; -write short stories; -work with past tense. Teaching aids and materials: Board, projector, laptop, worksheets, map, different props for Beauty and the Beast, 2 characters (students from class 7), pictures with the story Procedure: Stage Activity Interaction Time Skill Focus Observations Warm-up Ss are greeted and are reminded that in T-S 3’ Speaking this chapter they had fun learning about S-Ss different versions of Cinderella. They are S-T announced that they will discuss about one of their favourite stories and they are shown 3 pictures with clues, in order to guess the story. (CASTLE- ROSE- CANDLESTICK- CUP) Right after they guess the answer, 2 special guests enter in the classroom and interact with them. (Beauty and the Beast) Pre-reading Ss will be given small strips of paper on T-S 6’ Speaking which they will find 3 pictures from the S-Ss story. Each student will receive a different set of pictures and they will have 1 minute and a half to think about a short description. They will have to prove the guests that they are familiar with the story, by describing the pictures orally in 3 sentences (approximately 35 words). The pictures will be different and will represent different scenes from the Disney movie. The pictures will be projected on the board and the answers will be shared with the class. (2 students per set of pictures) While- The 2 guests will provide students with 4 S-S 6’ Reading reading different versions of the story Beauty and the Beast in different countries. The stories will be read out loud by 4 students in the class. Post-reading Ss will also receive a map with some Group 20’ symbols (a mountain, a castle, a rose and work a candlestick). They are invited to fulfill Individual the 4 challenges in order to help the Beast work become a prince again. A map will be displayed on the board. Controlled Challenge 1: The Rose practice The stories they read were written in the Writing present tense. Students will have to work Reading together and put the verbs in the past tense. The list with the verbs will be written in their notebooks. The answers will be checked with the class after 3 minutes of group work.
Semi- Challenge 2: The Mountain Writing
controlled Each team will have to identify the main Reading practice ideas in their text and write them on a mountain with the stages of the plot. (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, conclusion) The answers will be shared with the class.
Free Challenge 3: The Candlestick Writing
practice In this challenge, each student will work individually. Each student will receive a worksheet with the story, in which they will have to fill in the gaps with their own ideas in order to make the story traditional. They will also have to write a 35-lines ending for their story: Beauty and the Beast in Romania. Some versions will be shared with the class. Follow-up Their stories will be exhibited on a board T-Ss 2’ Speaking and and T will provide individual and general conclusions feedback for the students’ performance.
