QIYAM

AL LAIL

THE PROPHETIC METHOD

The virtues of Qiyam al lail and Salat ul
Tahajjud and the ones who observe it
have been mentioned in various verses of
the Holy Qur’an and in the Ahadith of the
Holy Prophet Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬

Literally, qiyam al lail translates as:

Standing at night, and tahajjud means: to
wake up from a sleep. The word tahajjud
also carries the meaning: to keep vigil.
The Hadith masters generally mention
the ahadith for both (qiyam al lail and
tahajjud salah) in the same chapter.

Qiyam al-layl is more general than

tahajjud, because it includes salah and
other acts of ibaadah and it includes
prayer before and after sleeping. Tahajjud
generally refers to the salah one offers
after awakening from a sleep. There are
numerous Quranic verses and ahadith
that specify the last part of the night as
the most virtuous time to engage in
various acts of worship

Surah Al-Sajdah, 32:15-16

“Only those believe in Our verses who,
when they are reminded by them, fall
down in prostration and exalt [Allah]
with praise of their Lord, and they are
not arrogant. They forsake their beds,
calling upon their Lord in fear and in
hope, and spend out of what We have
provided them with.”

2
Surah Al-Zumar, 39

“Is one who is devoutly obedient
during periods of the night, prostrating
and standing [in prayer], fearing the
Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of
his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say,
“Are those who know equal to those
who do not know?” Only they will
remember [who are] people of
understanding.”

3
Surah Al-Dhariyaat, 51:15-18

ِ * ٍ‫ات َو ُع ُيون‬
‫آخ ِذي َن َما آت َا ُه ْم‬ ٍ ‫ِإ َّن الْ ُمتَّ ِق َني ِيف َج َّن‬

It means, “Indeed, the righteous will be
among gardens and springs. Accepting
what their Lord has given them.
Indeed, they were before that; doers of
righteous. They used to sleep but little
of the night. And in the hours before
dawn they would ask forgiveness…”

" ‫كَ َذلِ َك َحتَّى يُ ِيض َء الْ َف ْج ُر‬
Abu Huraira reported Allah's
Messenger (‫ )ﷺ‬as saying:
Allah descends every night to the lowest
heaven when one-third of the first part of the
night is over and says: I am the Lord; I am the
Lord: who is there to supplicate Me so that I
answer him? Who is there to beg of Me so
that I grant him? Who is there to beg
forgiveness from Me so that I forgive him?
He continues like this till the day breaks.

people before you. It brings one closer

PROCEDURE OF QIYAM AL LAIL
IN ACCORDANCE WITH SUNNAH
SALAT AL TAHAJJUD IS A MINIMUM OF 2 RAKATS
WITH THE OPTIMAL RECOMMENDED AMOUNT BEING
8 RAKATS. LENGTHIER RECITATION IS SUPERIOR TO A
LARGER NUMBER OF RAKATS PRAYED.

Commencement of Salah al Tahajjud

It was narrated that 'Asim bin Humaid said:
"I asked 'Aishah with what did he- meaning
the Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬- start Qiyam Al-Lail? She
said: 'You have asked me something which
no one before you has asked. The

O Allah! All the praises are for you, You are the
Holder of the Heavens and the Earth, And
whatever is in them. All the praises are for You;
You have the possession of the Heavens and the
Earth And whatever is in them. All the praises are
for You; You are the Light of the Heavens and the
Earth And all the praises are for You; You are the
King of the Heavens and the Earth; And all the
praises are for You; You are the Truth and Your
Promise is the truth, And to meet You is true,
Your Word is the truth And Paradise is true And
Hell is true And all the Prophets (Peace be upon
them) are true; And Muhammad is true, And the
Day of Resurrection is true. O Allah ! I surrender
(my will) to You; I believe in You and depend on
You. And repent to You, And with Your help I
argue (with my opponents, the non-believers)
And I take You as a judge (to judge between us).
Please forgive me my previous And future sins;
And whatever I concealed or revealed And You
are the One who make (some people) forward
And (some) backward. There is none to be
worshipped but you.

Sufyan said that `Abdul Karim Abu Umaiya

Ali bin Abi Talib narrated that whenever
the Messenger of Allah would stand for
Salat, he would say:
“I have directed my face towards the One
who created the Heavens and the earth, as
a Hanif, and I am not of the idolaters.
Indeed, my Salat, my sacrifice, my living,
and my dying is for Allah, the Lord of all
that exists, there is no partner for Him, and
with this have I been ordered, and I am
among the Muslims. O Allah, You are the
King, there is none worthy of worship
except You. You are My Lord, and I am
Your slave, I have wronged myself, and I
admit to my sin, so forgive me all my sins,
verily, there is none who forgives sins but
You. And guide me to the best of the
manners, none guides to the best of them
except You, and turn the evil of them away
from me, [verily,] none can turn the evil of
them away from me except You. I have
believed in You. Blessed are You and
Exalted are You, I seek Your forgiveness
and I repent to you

Tasbih
It was narrated that Rabi'ah bin Ka'b said:
"I used to stay overnight at the Prophet's (‫)ﷺ‬
apartment and I used to hear him when he
prayed Qiyam at night saying: 'Subhan Allahi
Rabil-Alamin (Glory be to Allah, the Lord of the
worlds)' for a long time, then he said: 'Subhan
Allahi wa bi hamdihi (Glory and praise be to
Allah) for a long time."

For in Allah's sight are (all) His servants - those who say:
"Our Lord! we have indeed believed: forgive us, then, our
sins, and save us from the agony of the Fire” - Those who
show patience, Firmness and self-control; who are true (in
word and deed); who worship devoutly; who spend (in the
way of Allah); and who pray for forgiveness in the early
hours of the morning.

Ibn Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said, "He who says:
'Astaghfir ullah-alladhi la ilaha illa
Huwal-Haiyul-Qayyumu, wa atubu ilaihi (I seek
the forgiveness of Allah, there is no true god
except Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self- Subsisting,
and I turn to Him in repentance),' his sins will be
forgiven even if he should have run away from
the battlefield (while he was engaged in fighting
for the Cause of Allah)."

Al-Bukhari and Muslim for accepting Hadith)]

O Allah, You are my Lord, there is none worthy of

worship but You. You created me and I am your
slave. I keep Your covenant, and my pledge to
You so far as I am able. I seek refuge in You from
the evil of what I have done. I admit to Your
blessings upon me, and I admit to my misdeeds.
Forgive me, for there is none who may forgive
sins but You.
