Mercy Malaysia – Malaysian Medical Relief Society


Objectives: To focus on rapid medical responses in the assistance of communities affected by disaster.
Why do they established: A war happened in Kosova in 1999 where thousand of lives were lost and suffering was
widespread. Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, an O&G specialist established MERCY Malaysia to help those who affected.

2. UNICEF Malaysia – United Nation International Children’s Emergency Fund (1946), United Nation Children’s
Fund (1953)
Objectives: To save children’s lives, defend their rights, and to help them fulfil their potential from early childhood
through adolescence.
Why do they established: UNICEF has been working with the Government of Malaysia since 1954 by supporting
programmes in health, nutrition, water and sanitation, formal and non-formal education as well as services for
deprived children in poor urban areas.

3. St. John Ambulance of Malaysia


Objectives: Runs the ambulance services, event health services, first aid training and community services across
the country.
Why do they established: When the war happened 1938, the British Administration decided to form the St. John
Ambulance Brigade ("SJAB") in all larger towns.

4. SUARAM – Suara Rakyat Malaysia


Objectives: Defends all aspects of human rights especially the right to trial, freedom from abuse of police powers
and law enforcement agencies; freedom of expression and information, freedom of assembly and association,
freedom of religion, the right of minorities, refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and trafficked persons and
democracy.
Why do they established: non-governmental organization established in 1989 to monitor and advocate for the
respect of human rights in Malaysia.

5. SUHAKAM -Suruhanjaya Hak Asasi Manusia Malaysia


Objectives: To promote human rights education, advise on legislation and policy, and conduct investigations.
Why do they established: Established after the fallout of the Anwar Ibrahim controversy, some lacked confidence
in its independence from the government of the then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Muhammad.

6. SPCA – Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals


Objectives: To provide shelter and adoption, spay/neuter services, education, investigation of animal abuse,
assistance to caregivers, lobbying the government and to promote farm animal welfare.
Why do they established: Founded in 1958 to help animals especially the stray animals in need and bring animal
offenders to justice.

7. AWAM – All Women’s Action Society


Objectives: To provides training to raise awareness about issues relating to violence against women, advocacy for
improved legislation and policies for women, and counselling services and legal information for women facing
discrimination or violence.
Why do they established: AWAM was born in the midst of women finding their voices and coming together to
advocate for change. All the women found that issues on gender-based violence was not properly being addressed.

8. MNAWF – Malaysian National Animal Welfare Foundation


Objectives: To generate awareness and responsibility of all residents in Malaysia on animal welfare as part of the
policy towards the creation of a caring Malaysian society.
Why do they established: To promote a caring Malaysian society through creating awareness and a balanced
approach to animal welfare for the well being of animal and mankind.
