According to Brown and Lara (2011) as they cite Johnsons (2009) that say; there are

three ways when individuals take action in relation to the actions of the others. One's actions may
promote the success of others, obstruct the success of others, or not have any effect at all on the
success or failure of others. This can be in a form of working together cooperatively to
accomplish shared learning goals; Working against each other (competitively) to achieve a goal
that only one or a few can attain; Working by oneself (individualistically) to accomplish goals
unrelated to the goals of others. Working together can be a collaborative learning because
according to Laal and Ghodsi (2011) “collaborative learning is an educational approach to
teaching and learning that involves groups of learners working together to solve a problem,
complete a task, or create a product”.

There are number of benefits associated with this kind of aforementioned earning.
However according to Woods and Chen (2010) as they cite Johnsons (1994), there are conditions
to be met in order for a collaborative learning effort to be more productive rather than
competitive or individualistic methods. These are first, clearly perceived positive
interdependence; considerable promotive interaction; clearly perceived individual accountability
and personal responsibility to achieve the group’s goals; frequent use of the relevant
interpersonal and small-group skills, and; frequent and regular group processing of current
functioning to improve the group’s future effectiveness. Through then, collaborative can more
beneficial. According to Laal and Ghodsi (2011) as they summarize the benefits of collaborative
learning into its major categories, based on the paper of . Johnsons (1989) and Pantiz (1999). It
can be socially beneficial because collaborative earning helps to develop a social support system
for learners; it leads to build diversity understanding among students and staff; it also establishes
a positive atmosphere for modelling and practicing cooperation, and; it develops learning
communities. It can also be psychologically beneficial because student-centered instruction
increases students' self esteem; cooperation reduces anxiety, and; collaborative learning develops
positive attitudes towards teachers. Lastly is the academic benefits of collaborative learning.
Collaborative learning has academic benefits because it promotes critical thinking skills;
involves students actively in the learning process; the classroom results are improved; models
appropriate student problem solving techniques; large lectures can be personalized, and;
collaborative learning is especially helpful in motivating students in specific curriculum.
