MODAL AUXILLIARY

VERBS.
These are verbs that are used together with main verbs to indicate

 Ability.
 Possibility.
 Obligation.
 Permission.
 Commands.

1.CAN : It is used to indicate.


 Ability.
 Acquired knowledge or skills.
 Permission.
 Requests.

Examples :

(1) I can write well.

(2)Can you draw the curtains?

(3)Can I come in?

N/B You can’t use CAN and ABLE in the same sentence.

2. COULD : It is the past tense of can.


It is used to show :
 Permission.
 Ask a question
 Show ability.
 Possibility.

Examples : Kiptoo could run both the 100 and 200 meters races.
They could have lost their way to the market.
Could you repair this roof for me?

3.WOULD.
1. Expresses a wish. Suppose
2. Shows an action in the past.
3. Used with conditional sentences.
4. Shows a polite reminder.
Examples : If Regina would have slept earier she would have got
the bus.
May you live long.
I would love to visit England.

4. WILL : shows
 future predictions.
 Describes habits in the present.
 Requests.
 General Truths.
 Indicate intention.
Examples :
(1) I will bring you your pocket money.
(2) She will ensure that you get home.
(3) Will you please pass me that glass.

5.SHALL : This modal is used to indicate


 Future predictions.
 Used when making offers.
 Used to make requests.
 Used to indicate determination.
Examples :
1. We shall harvest honey next week.
2. We shall visit them next week.
3. I shall ensure that he is treated well.

6. SHOULD : It is a modal auxiliary verb used in sentences to


indicate the following :

 Express obligaton.
 Express piece of advice.
 When making a conclusion.
Examples :
1.You should obey your parents.
2.Drivers should not speed at all coasts.

SHOULD IS THE PAST TENSE OF SHALL.
