The reggae is a musical genre from Jamaica.


Jamaica is an island. It’s a country situated in the
Caribbean Sea.
This genre was born in 60’s but It’s most exactly
to say that the reggae music developed
between 1969 and 1983.
"Do the Reggay" was the first popular song to
use the word "reggae" in 1968 by Toots and
Maytals musical group.
ORIGEN

Reggae narrates news, social gossip, and


political criticism. And, It is related with the
Rastafari Movement because Reggae is
an important mean of transporting vital
messages of Rastafarianism.
“The musician becomes the messenger, and as
Rastafarians see it, ‘the soldier and the musician are
tools for change’”.

The “reggae” musical genre is of Jamaican


origin. The term reggae is sometimes used to
refer to most of Jamaica's typical rhythms ska,
rocksteady and dub.
This Caribbean country achieved independence
from the United Kingdom in 1962 and since
then Rock'n Roll began to enter with
immigration and through the radios that they
sound in from the United States.

The lyrics of reggae are professed against racism


and all forms of discrimination.
Jimmy Cliff on his theme 'The Harder They
Come' expresses a lot through the following
sentence:

“I prefer the tomb to live like a slave, as


true as today the sun shines, I will have
what belongs to me”.

This musical style is associated with


marihuana.

Worldwide in the 1970s thanks to Chris


Blackwell's Island label, which edited
figures such as Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff.

Drums (the typical drums to use in reggae is ‘one drop’)

Piano Rhythm guitar
Winds section: Sax, trumpet, thrombus, etc.
Patch percussion section: bongos, tombs, congas,
timbales, cuckoo, jembe, among other African
instruments.

It's the corrupt establishment or the "system".
Zion:
It's considered the Promised Land for the many
rastas, this land is Africa.
Yard (garden):
It's an expression to say house (home). Jamaica
is called jamdown.

Jah:
It is the name that the Rastafari community
gives to God. They believe that Jah resides
within each individual, is integral to them.
Dreadlocks:
It's a hair that is neither combed or cut.
Dub:
It's an electronic music genre created under
the influence of reggae.

Rhythm and blues -R&B:


It's a genre of music that originated in African
American communities in the 1940’s.
Heartbeat:
It's the movement or sound of someone’s heart.
Dancehall:
It's a contemporary reggae style.
ARTIST INVOLVED IN REGGAE

In the Reggae genre there are a lot of important


artists with great musical hits. For example,
there are three artists who were very important
inside the Reggae genre.
1. Bob Marley
2. Peter Tosh
3. Jimmy Cliff
ARTIST INVOLVED IN REGGAE

They formed a vocal group called The


Wailers in 1962 and recorded their first
album called "Judge Not". Actually,
they recorded a lot of other hits that
became popular at that time. But, like
all musical groups, they broke up and
built musical careers.

Bob Marley had a lot of musical hits, actually,


he was also a social leader in Jamaica. He was
fighting against the elimination of interracial
violence. Because of this, he was loved for a lot of
persons but hated by others.
He died in 1981 and was buried with honors for
his artistic and public relevance. Bob Marley is
considered one of the great legend of the music

ARTIST INVOLVED IN REGGAE

Peter Tosh also had great hits, but he was not a


pacifist like Bob, he was more of a revolutionary
activist. His most important album was in 1976
called "Legalize It", in which he talked openly
about the legalization of marihuana.
Thanks to his fame he was able to tour with The
Rolling Stones and Mick Jagger. Peter was killed
in 1987 in his home, but he left a great legacy.

ARTIST INVOLVED IN REGGAE

Jimmy Cliff won international recognition when


he composed songs for Perry Henzell's film “The
Harder They Come” which was considered one of
the best selling albums in the history of reggae.
In October 2003, the Government of Jamaica
awarded him the Order of Merit honorary award
for his contribution to Jamaican film and music.
Also, in 2010 he was included in the Rock and Roll
