Types of Sports
In https://penaltyfile.com, “no matter where you go across the world, one
common string that ties us all together is the love for sports. However, this doesn't
mean everyone loves the same sport, yet because of the wide variety of sports,
everyone has their own favorites.”
So, what really comprises a sport?
Sports are physical activities which involves strength, agility, endurance, etc.
wherein opponents face each other for the sake of competition. There are so many
sports available in the world, but we can categorize them according to the numbers
of players involved. The three main categories involved are individual sport, dual
sport and team sport.
Task 2: What’s the Sports Category?
Direction: Categorize the following sports according to its number of players and put
a check (✓) mark on its corresponding classification. Write your answers in your
notebook.

SPORT INDIVIDUAL DUAL TEAM

1. Badminton

What is It

The Difference of Individual/Dual Sports vs Team Sports

In https://www.megaessays.com/viewpaper/102848.html, “the main and most
obvious difference between
these three kinds of sports is
the communication work. If
you play an Individual sport,
you only have yourself to
listen to and don't have to
cope with other's ideas.
Then, if you play with
someone else, it makes it a
little more complicated and
you have to open to their
ideas too, since they're the https://www.todayimoutside.com/post/types-of-sports
other half of your team and have just as much thought as you do. Team sports are
the hardest of all. You must have a lot of patience and be very open-minded
because everyone might have different ideas. Everyone in a team needs to be
considerate and work with each other. This is where the word "teamwork" would
come from. The exact definition of teamwork is: "work done by several associates
with each doing a part but all subordinating personal prominence to the efficiency of
the whole". This can be viewed as the negative side of teamwork to those who are a
little biased. Those are the people who would rather do Individual sports. Then
again, the positive side about dual or teamwork is that there are others to rely on, so
when in need, they can help and "save the ball".”
In general, Individual sport relies on the individual while team sports rely on
teammates. In playing any type of sports, it is important to have focus, clear
understanding of the game, and work ethics in mastering the skills.
Individual/Dual/Team Sports Basic Skills
In playing any kind of sport, it is important to know the basic skills needed in
the sport. Here are the following examples of the basics in playing different
individual, dual and team sports.
According to Ben Larcombe (2012), here are
some of the basics in playing table tennis:
Table Tennis
1. Grip- It’s very important that you master this
early on as it is a slow and painful process

trying to alter you grip later in your development.
• Backhand grip
• Forehand grip
2. Stance and Ready Position
• Stance- describes the way in which a player is standing during any
stage of a game. For example, when serving there are correct and
incorrect stances that are specific to each individual service. Therefore,
the correct stance is dependent on the stroke being played.
• Ready Position- describes the generic, neutral stance that you might
expect to see adopted by a table tennis player before they receive
serve – feet quite wide apart, knees bent, upper body crouched
forward, both arms out in front of you, and the bat in a neutral position.
3. Strokes
4. Footwork

Badminton
According to Liam Walsh (n.d.), “here are nine basic skills you need to learn
to play Badminton”.
1. Knowing how to warm up properly
2. The basic forehand and backhand grip
3. The basic six corners footwork
4. The split step or the ready stance
5. The basic shots
6. Perception and anticipation
7. Hand-eye coordination

9. Tactical and strategic thinking

Team Sports
Basketball
Tom Stewart (2018) defines, “basketball as a fast-paced game that requires the
knowledge and instinct to perform quickly and properly. The sport of basketball
requires five basic skills. While some players might be more experienced with some
skills than others, it is best to have at least some ability in all five areas”.
Stewart introduces that there are 5 basic skills of
basketball which are as follows:
1. Running- Running is a big part of basketball.
In a full-court game, you will find yourself running
back and forth as the game quickly transitions
between offense and defense. When you have the
ball, running will help you to avoid defenders and get
to the basket quicker.
2. Shooting- In order to score points in
basketball, you need to shoot the ball into the hoop.
This requires the ability to properly hold and throw

ts/interactive-look-at-every-shot-kobe-

8
the ball into the air toward the basket while avoiding defenders.
3. Passing-Basketball is a team sport that involves finding a teammate who is
open for a shot. The ability to pass the ball to this player can make the
difference between scoring and not scoring.
4. Dribbling- Dribbling is an important skill for all basketball players. This skill will
allow you to move up and down the court, maneuver past defenders and
execute plays.
5. Jumping- Jumping is another skill that can define how good a basketball
player is. Jumping is involved in offense during the jump ball in the beginning,
while taking shots and sometimes while trying to catch a pass. On defensive
you will need the ability to jump when trying to block a shot or a pass. Being
able to out jump your opponent for a rebound also is important.

Volleyball
According to Irena (n.d.) of prorecathlete.com, there are 7 basic skills you
need to learn to play Volleyball:
• Volleying- Many beginners think a volley and a set are the same thing, but
they are two different terms. A volley is a more generic term that means
contacting the ball as an overhead pass with your hands (mostly your fingers).
A set is a type of volley. A volley can be used on your own side of the court, or
it can be used as an offensive way of getting the ball back over the net. A set,
on the other hand, is generally a pass between players on the same team.
• Forearm Passing or bumping- This is when a player contacts the volleyball
with their forearms and redirects the ball to one of their teammates.
• Setting- A set is a specialized type of volley. It’s usually the second hit, and
it’s intended to set up one of your teammates to attack the ball. So, it’s
basically volleying the ball in a way that means the attacker can hit the ball
over the net.
• Diving- Diving is basically crashing to the floor in an all-out attempt to keep
the ball from touching the floor. When diving
for the volleyball, remember that you want to
contact the ball before you hit the floor
(unless you’re doing a pancake, see below).
• Attacking- While spiking is the most
glamourous and well-known type of attack,
there are other ways to deliver an offensive
play as well.
• Blocking- Probably one of the most straight-
forward named skills, a block is a defensive
play when a player jumps at the net to block
the hit from coming onto their team’s side of
the net. The key secret to blocking is https://www.philstar.com/sports/2017/08/25/17326
timing. 15/philippine-spikers-fall-vietnamese-brace-thais

• Serving- Every play in volleyball starts

with a serve. As one of my coaches used to say, serving is the only time in the
game that you start with full control of the ball. Therefore, you’ll often see a lot
of strategy used by servers.

9
CHOOSING A SPORT
Kyle Bart (2017) emphasizes that “an activity/sport should be chosen based
on an individual’s preference and lifestyle”. He the added guidelines to consider in
choosing a sport.
• Choose the Sport Depending on the Type of Your Temper-
Picking the right kind of sport, first of all, you have to pay attention to the type
of your temper as if you`re a calm and even-tempered person you shouldn’t
force yourself to play fast sports as basketball, volleyball, football, water polo
and so on. It would be better to choose bowling, billiards, ballroom dancing,
riding a bike or something like golfing, horseback riding or rock climbing. And
vice versa if you`re the active type of temper any fast kind of sport will fit you
perfectly. Football, tennis, basketball, swimming, running, fencing… Try and
choose! Just think what you prefer – team games or not – and take your pick.
• Choose the Sport that you enjoy
You may want to practice sports for various reasons, but your right sport must
enjoy you. Don’t forget about it! Only if you`re fun visiting a training can you
achieve the desired results. It’s also important to feel comfortable during the
workout that`s why your sportswear must get the right fit. You should pay
special attention to your shoes. If you`d want to do hiking or rock climbing,
choose the right hiking shoes or boots. If you`re going to train in the gym or
start running, observe men`s Crossfit shoes and get the perfect one.
• Choose the Sport that Fits Your Lifestyle-
Of course, you’re always busy as you spend the most of your time at work
and when you start doing sports you should coordinate it with your daily
routine. So, your decision will depend on the degree of occupation. You must
decide for yourself what is the best time for your training and how does your
new hobby fit into your routine? You also can try several sports and choose
that one which is best suited for you in all plans. Besides, if you want to work
out with your friend, you must coordinate it with him.
• Choose the Sport that Accommodates Your Fitness and Health
Problems-
If you have any health problems or injuries, see your doctor before
commencing the regular practice of sport. In some cases, your doctor even
can recommend what kind of sport to choose to improve your health or such
training can be a part of the rehabilitation. Plus assess your fitness level and
fitness goals that could certainly affect your decision. If you want to kill extra
calories and maintain your shape, choose more active kinds of sport. If you
want to get out of your office more often and talk to your friends, billiards or
bowling will fit you well.

Whichever sport you choose, remember you’ve already done the right thing
that you involve in sports and don`t want to sit on the couch.

Safety Measures to Avoid Unnecessary Injuries in Playing Games and Sports

Daian Moreno (n.d.) explains that, “in taking part in any physical activity, it is
essential to first observe safety measures to avoid unnecessary injuries. Although

10
certain injuries may not be avoided, most injuries can be prevented by observing
good judgement.
She introduces the safety measures to avoid injuries:
1. Safety Equipment. Have the appropriate gears for the type of activity such as
clothing, shoes, and protective gears that would prevent uneasiness and
harm. Also take into consideration the activity area.
2. Hydration. Keep your body hydrated with enough water or fluids during
exercise or activity especially during hot weather. Drink a cup of water
minutes before exercise and every 15 minutes during exercise to help your
body replenish lost fluids.
3. Perform Moderate-Intensity Physical Activity. It is better to perform physical
activities with moderate intensity on a regular basis rather than occasional
and strenuous activities. A vigorous workout will tire your body easily and
overtraining yourself can lead to injuries.
4. Weather Condition. Wear appropriate clothes for the weather. The clothing
you wear must make you feel a little cool at the start of exercise. Wear light-
colored clothes during sunny days as not to absorb too much heat and avoid
overheating and put on sun protection. During cold weather, a thermal suit will
help you keep warm. Avoid using thick clothes for it constrains perspiration
and can cause your body temperature to go up.
