Technical Description
The MH Hydraulic Roughneck is mounted on an extendable arm which allow horizontal travelling across the drill floor between the rotary table
and a suitable parking position. The extendable arm is again mounted on a column with built-in turning drive allowing the machine to be slewed
and parked away from the tight area around the well center.
The hydraulic spinner and torque wrench are trolley mounted for vertical adjustment by means of hydraulic cylinders.
The MH Hydraulic Roughneck is equipped with a built-in hydraulic/mechanical system, in order to bypass the lower torque wrench and use the
upper torque wrench for making up / breaking out bit-subs to bit in bit-breaker.
Torque wrench
The torque wrench is mounted directly below the spinner and consists of two parts assembled on top of each other. The upper parts can be
rotated relatively to the other by means of hydraulic cylinders. Securing the tool joint is taken care of by built-in hydraulically operated clamping
cylinders.
The hydraulic torque cylinders deliver a precise torque for each pipe dimension whilst clamping force is automatically set when torque is
adjusted.
The torque wrench is trolley mounted for vertical adjustment by means of hydraulic cylinders.
Pipe spinner
The hydraulic spinner is placed on a spring-supported carrier for allowing the spinner to deflect up and down independent of the torque wrench
when spinning in or out. The spring-supported carrier is also connected to a pair of hydraulic cylinders that enables the operator to adjust the
gap between the torque wrench and the spinner. This is very convenient when e.g. handling stabilizers up to 17 ½”.
The spinner is equipped with equally sized directly hydraulic driven rollers to ensure torque is equally distributed on all rollers.
The pipe spinner is designed for use with drill pipe and / or drill collar 3 ½ to 9 ¾. Suitable for the most commonly used drill pipe and drill collars.
This is the pipe spinner that has been used more or less unchanged in more than 100 MH Hydraulic Roughnecks.
Each of the four rollers driven by one hydraulic motor The pipe spinner rollers are made from Aluminium. The pipe spinner is designed for use
when additional heights is required for handling of stabilisers, bottom hole assemblies and / or other special tools, and has a an additional
vertical elevation of 400 mm, i.e. a total max. elevation of 900 mm.

Hydraulic controls
Panel 1 - Hydraulic remote control stand:
Comprises hydraulic, manually operated joysticks, designed for location on drill floor. Panel includes all necessary levers and a torque gauge for
a smooth and safe operation and control of the hydraulic roughneck (see fig. 1).

Panel 2 - Torque adjust panel for driller’s cabin:

Comprises hydraulic torque adjust controls and torque read out gauge designed for installation in the driller’s cabin.

Panel 3 - Local torque adjust panel on the machine:

Comprises torque read out gauge. Mounted locally on the machine to select calibration mode and to operate the pipe positioner cylinder.
Operation of pipe spinner swing (If equipped) is also executed from this panel (see fig. 1).

Figure 1: The hydraulic controls comprises 3 different control panels: panel 1 – Hydraulic remote control stand; panel 2 – Torque adjust panel
for driller’s cabin; and panel 3 – Local torque adjust panel on the machine.

Furthermore, it is possible to run all functions from the valve block locally on the machine. This is only for maintenance purposes.
