NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY WOMEN

FILMMAKERS ALLIANCE
GRANT PACKET, 2011
This packet is for application to receive a grant from Northwestern
University Women Filmmakers Alliance (NUWFA).
The grant is for a total of $1500.
Grant recipients are permitted to receive Studio 22 Grants, DAC
grants, CRC grants and all other forms of funding in combination
with the NUWFA Grant, provided that the recipient continues to
represent NUWFA in all forms of the production.
In order to qualify for the grant, the director, the writer or the
producer must be a woman.
Projects must be shot in Fall Quarter 2011
And completed for a screening
(The grant recipient must produce a final cut)
For the Studio 22 Premiere in June 2012
Please submit the grant packet by Friday April 15 at 11:59 p.m.
The Pitch Date is Wednesday, April 20, 2011

MISSION STATEMENT: The NUWFA seeks to unify, educate, and promote female
filmmakers not only within the Northwestern community, but also beyond the
educational sphere. We accomplish these goals by promoting the development of
visual media created by women, aiding women filmmakers in production and
encouraging women's involvement as leaders in the Radio/Television/Film
community at Northwestern.
SECTION I: Full Screenplay or Film Transcript (Include a short summary of your film.)

SECTION II: Resumes (Director, Producer)


1. For producer(s) and director: Insert a list of the shoots and experiences that make you
feel ready and qualified for this particular project. (Max. 1 page per person)

2. For director: Write a personal statement describing your previous work: what it meant,
how it was received, what it was like making it and anything else you’d like to share with
the board to allow us to understand what kind of artist and visionary you are. (Max. 1 page
per person) Feel free to include materials such as video samples, photographs, or any other
artistic mediums.

3. What do you think makes a good producer? If you don't have a producer(s), explain
why and what you are doing to secure one.

SECTION III: Production Logistics


1. Insert a logistics calendar, showing us your plan to complete this project from now until
the release/premiere of the project. Be specific and thorough. Include fundraising, crew
head/general petitions, production meetings, shoot dates, picture lock, coloring, audio post-
production. We understand that this schedule will change, but we need to know that you
have a plan.

2. What are you shooting on? Why is this the best possible medium for your film? (Please
include aesthetic reasons, financial, etc.)

3. What equipment (from the Cage or rented) do you plan on using? For what purpose and
how? Refer to scenes, shots, and moments in your script if necessary. Is this equipment
represented in your budget and is it a realistic possibility?

5. What are your post-production plans? Include processing, transferring, coloring, etc.

6. How are you planning to back-up your project during production (if applicable) and
post-production? Are you buying a hard drive?

7. What plans do you have for your project after it is complete? Which festivals do you
plan on submitting to? Why would your film be a good fit for these festivals?

(Please Note: Grant recipients will be allowed access to the Cage Equipment in Louis Hall.
However, all extracurricular film groups are required to shoot within the first five weeks of the
quarter. You must plan to comply with this regulation by adequately scheduling your logistics
calendar.)
SECTION IV: Set Experience
1. Insert a crew breakdown. Does your film require any special positions? We do not
expect you to have any crew already attached to the project but if you do, please mention
them.

2. Write a description of your ideal crew atmosphere. Will it be a large, exciting shoot
involving students of all skill-levels or a small, tight-knit crew who will feel like a family?
Take all of this into consideration as you figure out the size and dispersion of your crew and
the responsibilities your crewmembers will each have.

3. How will you make this a positive set experience for those involved with the film?
Think about your past set experience and what could have been done to improve them. Why
will people want to work on this film? Please include a brief response from both the director
and producer (if applicable).

SECTION V: Budget Overview


Insert a complete budget breakdown, with projected costs and a fully-itemized inventory of where
all funds involved with the production will be going (1-2 pages max). Include any post-production
costs, insurance costs, and a 10% contingency. Please explain any unusual allocations or anything
else that needs clarification.

SECTION VI: Short Answer Questions


1. Why NUWFA? How does your project include women in production?

2. What foreseeable problems are there with the project and how do you plan to address them?

3. What is your inspiration for the project?

4. How would this project reflect on NUWFA? On Northwestern University?

5. Why do you feel this movie needs to be made? Why now?

6. What is the “hook” for the project - what will people remember about it? Why would they
want to see it?

7. What type of audience would this film appeal to?

Be short. Be direct. A concise paragraph is better than a rambling page.
