The Goal of Christian Living

Reflection I

Can you be good without God?

Reflection II

“Can you be good without God?” Honestly, when I first heard this question, it made me
think about of what the world would be like if God does not exist. Would there be good, or bad?
Right or wrong?
While I was watching the video, the first thing that came into my mind was the teaching
of my late mother. I remembered when my mom was still alive, she would always say, “Without
God, we are not capable of doing what is right or good, because God, Himself defines good.”
Since then, it has always been engraved in my mind and heart. The video clip emphasized that if
there is no God, there will be no basis for objective good or bad and right or wrong, therefore,
objective moral values would not exist. Yes, I totally agree with this notion. I remembered when
I was in elementary, we had this saying which we recited everyday before the start of our class
which is, “God is good all the time and all the time God is good.” We can be good without
believing in God but we cannot be Good without the existence of God. If we take a look at the
saying, it emphasizes that God is good all the time, therefore, God, Himself is good, making Him
the reference point for moral values which is the standard against which all our actions and
decisions are measured or judged. If God does not exist, there will be no objective reference
point of what is good or bad and right or wrong and all we are left is one person’s viewpoint,
which is no more valid than anyone else’s viewpoint which we refer as subjectivism. If this
happen, I believe it would bring about enormous chaos in our world because of conflicting
ideologies.
