My Learning Feedback Diary

By: Princess Angel Lucañas

Honestly, I wasn’t really expecting too much from this class but if I were to
describe this class as a whole, it would be memorable and worthwhile. Why? Because
this rotation has taught me a lot of things that are vital in my future profession.

One of the things that I have learned is about school nursing and what does it
takes to be a good and effective school nurse. School Health Nursing is a
specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic
success and lifelong achievement and health of the students. In School health
Nursing, the school nurse provides health education by providing health information
to individual students and group of students through health education, science and
other classes. They also assist on health education curriculum development, provide
programs for staff, families and the community, health advocacy, treatment of common
ailments and attending to emergency cases.

However, before we can be a school nurse, we should have what it takes to be

one. This includes the skills of physical assessment and screening, health education
and counselling, oral and written communication, basic management, life skills and
social mobilization which are important in delivering high-quality health service to
students and school personnel. It is also important for the school nurse to maintain a
friendly environment to avoid the kids to be frightened or scared of them. I
remembered, when I was in my fifth grade, we had a cooking class and I was chopping
some onions but accidentally, I cut my finger. It was quite big and deep, and there were
spurts of blood so the first thing that my teacher did was to bring me to the school
clinic. When I got to the school clinic, I saw the school nurse and I got scared so I hid
at the back of my teacher crying because it seems like she is not friendly and she did
not even bother to smile for a bit. Just like in this case, it is really important for us
nurses to be mindful of our actions and facial expressions and maintain a friendly
environment especially that we are dealing with kids who can be easily frightened by
adults.

Another thing that I have learned is applying first aid measure for different
circumstances which I can say, is a very important skill that we nurses should have in
case of emergency situations. For instance, our group were able to comprehensively
present on how to do apply first aid measure for fainting and common allergic
reactions which is timely and relevant to my situation since I seldom experience fainting
when I’m exhausted and I also have common allergies to seafoods, chicken, eggs and
many others. This lesson has taught me on how to properly manage and help someone
who faints and suffer from common allergic reaction especially someone experiencing
anaphylaxis and even myself of course. I even learned that, if you have a severe allergic
reaction, suffering from anaphylaxis and potentially life-threatening consequence of
an allergic reaction, you can inject epinephrine with the use of EpiPen which is an
auto-injector that help reverse the symptoms of what could be a severe acute allergic
reaction. We also have first aid measures for fractures, sprain and strain. I
remembered when I was in my eighth grade, a fellow student had an open fracture and
it was in the knee. The bone really got out of the skin and it was bleeding profusely
and I remembered that I was the one who called for our school nurse to attend to the
student. And when the school nurse got to the scene, she immediately applied
dressing to stopped the bleeding and the few minutes later, an ambulance arrived and
the student was brought to the hospital. This is why, it is really important for us
nurses to have a knowledge on how to apply first aid measures for all circumstances
(burns, fractures, sprain, strain, fainting, allergic reactions, parasitic infection,
hyperventilation, cardiac arrest, etc.) and even basic life support like cardiopulmonary
resuscitation. In this way, we can help save lives and prevent further complication or
even death that is brought about by these circumstances.
Lastly, part of the requirements for this class is making a presentation of our
structured health teaching (SHT) and we will be utilizing this in teaching grade-
school students about maintaining good health which I really find very interesting.
Actually, we were supposed to do this by visiting some schools but unfortunately, this
pandemic that we are battling right now has made it impossible for us to experience it.
So, what our teacher did was to give us a hypothetical profile of Grade 1 Section-
Pinya and our group were task to teach these children about cough, colds and fever
including their signs and symptoms, causes and management through demonstration.
Actually, we just had our demonstration last May 15, 2021. Our group acted as
educators while our other classmates acted as the students. After the activity, I
realized that it’s never really easy to be a teacher especially in young children. We
need to be mindful of our actions, choice of words, and tone of our voice. I also
learned that, in teaching young children, we need to be creative, enthusiastic and most
of all energetic because younger children have short attention span. We should also
make sure to maintain high level of energy from beginning throughout the period.

Overall, if I were to describe my experience throughout this class, it would be

fun, entertaining, informative and worthwhile. It has really imparted a lot of information
and new knowledge that I can apply in the future when I become a registered nurse. I
think, this class has been a very productive and efficient one. As for my teacher, I am
extremely grateful for all her hard works in sharing both her knowledge and expertise in
this class. Even though, we were challenged by this pandemic, she managed to adjust
and adapt in the new learning platform just to be able to teach her students. And that
despite of being far from her students, she still remained true to her profession by
delivering a quality education. I salute you Ma’am Geraldine Anque! It has been an
honour being your student in this challenging time.
