Bowing is nothing less than an art form in Japan, respect pounded into children’s heads from
the moment they enter school. For tourists, a simple inclination of the head or an attempt at
a bow at the waist will usually suffice. The duration and inclination of the bow is
proportionate to the elevation of the person you’re addressing. For example, a friend might
get a lightning-fast 30-degree bow; an office superior might get a slow, extended, 70-degree
bow. It’s all about position and circumstance.
There is no tipping in any situation in Japan — cabs, restaurants, personal care. To tip
someone is actually a little insulting; the services you’ve asked for are covered by the price
given, so why pay more? If you are in a large area like Tokyo and can’t speak any Japanese, a
waiter or waitress might take the extra money you happen to leave rather than force

Light pollution is the excessive, misdirected or invasive use of artificial outdoor lighting.
Mismanaged lighting affects the environment, energy resources, wildlife, humans and
astronomy research.
Light pollution is not a new phenomenon. Over the last 50 years, as countries became
affluent and urbanized, demand for outdoor lighting increased and light pollution sprawled
beyond the city limits and into suburban and rural areas. This form pollution is now prevalent
in Asia, Europe, and North America, particularly in cities like Los Angeles, New York and
Washington D.C. In 2008, National Geographic magazine named Chicago the most light-
polluted city in the United States.
However, the most light-polluted spot in the world is Hong Kong, China. In March 2013, the
University of Hong Kong named the city the most light polluted in the world. A study by the
university found the night sky in Tsim Sha Tsui, an urban neighborhood in southern Kowloon,
Hong Kong, to be 1,200 times brighter than a normal urban city sky. Luminous pollution of
this magnitude is on the rise worldwide. In a 2010 article from the Ecology and Society
Journal, Hölker and others stated the use of artificial lighting increases by 20% each year,
depending on the region, and noted there is an urgent need for light pollution policies that
surpass energy efficiency to include humans, animals and the environment.

Water pollution happens __________ (6) toxic substances enter water bodies such as lakes,
rivers, oceans and so on, getting dissolved in them, lying suspended in the water or
depositing on the bed. This degrades the quality of water. Not __________ (7) does this spell
disaster for aquatic ecosystems, the pollutants also seep through and reach the groundwater,
which might end up in our households as contaminated water we use in our daily activities,
including drinking.
Water pollution can be __________ (8) in a number of ways, one of the most polluting being
city sewage and industrial waste discharge. Indirect sources __________ (9) water pollution
include contaminants that enter the water supply from soils or groundwater systems and
from the atmosphere via rain. Soils and groundwater contain __________ (10) residue of
human agricultural practices and also improperly disposed of industrial wastes.
Pollutants can be of varying kinds: organic, inorganic, radioactive and so on. In fact, the list of
possible water contaminants is just too vast to be listed here.

There are many causes that lead to water pollution. One main cause of this issue is waste
water coming from many factories and then being directly pulled out into water bodies,
especially into rivers or seas without any treatment because this is the most convenient way
of disposing waste water. Industrial waste consists of some kinds of chemical substances
such as sulphur, which is harmful for marine life. Lead is known as the main reason for cancer
disease. Cancer has become a popular disease in several communes which are called “cancer
villages”. Another cause is the awareness of citizens, people always use water for many
purposes and then they dump waste water or garbage directly into rivers, canals and ponds
and so on. In 2004, because of a bird flu outbreak in Viet Nam, people threw poultry to water
body that made water highly polluted.

1. __________ Millie is 14 years old and lives in Miami. She has 204 friends – and she makes
two or three more friends every week. About 20 of her friends also live in Miami. Some go to
the same school, and others go to the same music clubs and sports centers. She often sees
them. The others live in other cities and other countries: England, Canada, Japan … She never
meets these friends, but she talks to them on the Internet. They are her “My Space Friends”.
2. __________ Because of websites like MySpace, Yahoo 360 and Bebo, people can make
friends online. These websites are very popular all over the world, especially with young
people. Users have their own homepage. They give information about themselves. They write
letters for their webpage, show photos and give opinions. They write about their favourite
films, music and TV programmes.
3. __________ For many young people, a good homepage is an important part of their image.
It says: “This is me! I have something to say. These things – and these people – are important
in my life.” And these websites are also an easy way to talk to a lot of different people. That is
why teenagers likes these “friends” websites.
4. __________ But some people are worried that these websites aren’t safe. For example, it is
impossible to know that the information on a homepage is true. Perhaps the 14-year-old girl
you talk to online is really a 40-year-old man.
5.__________ So here is some advice. Keep your webpage private. (only friends can see a
private homepage). Do not put photos of yourself on your homepage. Do not meet people
that you only know because of the website. And finally, remember that online friends are fun,
but they are not the same as real friends.

undergraduate students in Iowa State University to handle mathematical computations in
nuclear physics. In World War II, computers were developed in order to wage counter
espionage and break codes used by the enemy. In the post-war years the scope of
computers was expanded to include the military industrial complex and academia. Obviously

However, the invention of telescopes in 1608 enabled people to learn that the Moon is just
another planetary body. And mankind’s dream of walking on the Moon suddenly seemed
possible.
The dream came true on July 20th, 1969 when Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael
Collins flew to the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 lunar mission. Neil Armstrong was the first
to step onto the Moon. After admiring the tranquil, desolate beauty of the Moon’s surface,

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin completed their mission, while Collins stayed in orbit to
maintain the systems on board the spacecraft.
During the stay of more than twenty-one hours on the Moon’s surface, the astronauts found
no rain or wind at all. The Moon was like a desert with plains, mountains, and valleys. The
surface was covered with dust, which was so thick that they left footprints where they had
walked. They left a United States of America flag there and return to Earth with forty-six

A new study published in the journal Science shows definitive evidence of organic matter on
the surface of Mars. The data was collected by NASA's nuclear-powered rover Curiosity. It
confirms earlier findings that Mars, the Red Planet once contained carbon-based
compounds. These compounds – also called organic molecules – are essential ingredients for
life as scientists understand it.
The organic molecules were found in Mars's Gale Crater, a large area that may have been a
watery lake over three billion years ago. The rover encountered traces of the molecule in
rocks extracted from the area. The rocks also contain sulfur, which scientists speculate helped
preserve the organics even when the rocks were exposed to the harsh radiation on the
surface of the planet.
Scientists are quick to state that the presence of these organic molecules is not sufficient
evidence for ancient life on Mars, as the molecules could have been formed by non-living
processes. But it's still one of the most astonishing discoveries, which could lead to future
revelations. Especially when one considers the other startling find that Curiosity uncovered
around five years ago.
