Physics Assignment for Engineers

This document contains an assignment for a university physics course. It includes 4 questions related to concepts in physics like momentum, forces, and elastic collisions. The first question involves calculating the mass of a second railroad car after it collides with and sticks to a first car. The second question contains sub-questions about the velocity of an automobile with a broken parking brake, whether zero acceleration means no forces, and the force needed for a basketball to bounce. The third question involves calculating the initial speed of a bullet after an elastic collision with a wooden block. The fourth question involves experiments to determine the coefficient of static friction between two surfaces using an inclined plane. Rubrics are provided to evaluate the answers.

ASSIGNMENT 2
PHYS 501– UNIVERSITY PHYSICS1

Q1: (20 marks)

A 9,300 kg Railroad car traveling at a velocity of 15m/s strikes a second boxcar at rest. If the two
cars stick together and move off with a velocity of 6m/s, what is the mass of the second car?

Q2: (20marks)

1. The parking brake on a 1200kg automobile has broken, and the vehicle has reached a momentum
of 7800kg.m/s. What is the velocity of the vehicle? (10 marks)
2. Suppose that the acceleration of an object is zero. Does this mean that there are no forces acting on
it? (5 marks)
3. When a basketball player dribbles a ball, it falls to the floor and bounces up. Is a force required to
make it bounce? Why? If a force is needed, what is the agent? (5 marks)

Q3: (30 marks)

A bullet with a mass of 0.020 kg collides in elastically with a wooden block of mass 2.5 kg,
initially at rest. After the collision, the bullet + block have a speed of 1.2 m/s. What was the initial
speed of the bullet?

Q4: (30marks)

Below is the friction apparatus you will need to use in your experiment.

ASSIGNMENT 2
PHYS 501– UNIVERSITY PHYSICS1

a. How you can prove that the coefficient of static friction between the two surfaces is
simply the tangent of the angle of repose. Summarize and organize all your
computations. (Hint: µ=f/n from this you can find that µ=tanθ where θ is the angle
when block began to slide down while you were raising the top end of incline plane).
(15 marks)
b. You are experimenting on the coefficient of static friction between two pairs of
surfaces using the above method. How can you determine which of the two has a
higher coefficient of static friction. Input sample computations to support your
answer. Summarize and organize all your computations and conclusions. (15 marks)
