Please answer the following questions:

1. You’re riding a unicorn at 25 m/s and come to a uniform stop at a red light 20 m
away. What’s your acceleration?

v 2=v 20 +2 a s

m
v 0=25 , where v f =0 ,∧s=20 m
s
v 20 25 2 2
a= → → 15.6 m/s
2 s 2∗20

a=−15.6 m/s 2 The minus sign shows that the unicorn decelerates.

2. A brick is dropped from 100 m up. Find its impact velocity and air time.
h=100 m
v 0=0

g t2 √ 2 h = 2∗100 =4.52 s
h=v 0 t+

g √9.81

t=4.52 s

v=v 0 + g∗t → v=g∗t=9.81∗4.52=44.34

a. Find its max height above ground.

b. At what times is it at ground level?

Solution:

The equation of motion of arrow is given as

𝑦(𝑡) = 𝑦0 + 𝑣0𝑡 – 𝑔𝑡2 / 2
𝑣(𝑡) = 𝑣0 − 𝑔𝑡

In that case
𝑦(𝑡) = −12 + 38𝑡 − 4.9𝑡2
𝑣(𝑡) = 38 − 9.8𝑡

At the maximum height point 𝑣(𝑡) = 0. Time reaches the maximum height
𝑡 = 38/9.8 = 3.87 s

The maximum height

ℎ𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 𝑦(3.87) = −12 + 38 × 3.78 − 4.9 × 3.872 = 63 m

An arrow will be at ground at

𝑦(𝑡) = 0
0 = −12 + 38𝑡 − 4.9𝑡2

Roots
𝑡 = 0.33 s and 𝑡 = 7.59 s

Answers: a. 63 m
b. 0.33 s and 7.59 s

4. How fast should you throw a kumquat straight down from 40 m up so that
its impact speed would be the same as a mango’s dropped from 60 m?

h = 40m, 60m

Solution.

For an apple

2ℎ1𝑔 = 𝑣 2 − 𝑢2

For a mango

2ℎ2𝑔 = 𝑣2

2ℎ2𝑔 − 2ℎ1𝑔 = 𝑣 2 − 𝑣 2 + 𝑢 2

→ 2𝑔 (ℎ2 − ℎ1) = 𝑢 2

→ 𝑢 = √ 2 g (h2−h 1)= √2 ∙ 9.8∙( 60−40)=19.8 m/¿ 𝑠

Answer. 𝑢 = 19.8 𝑚/𝑠.

5. A dune buggy accelerates uniformly at

1.5 m/s2 from rest to 22 m/s. Then the brakes are applied and it stops 2.5 s
later. Find the total distance traveled.

𝑎 = 1.5 𝑚/𝑠 2
𝑣 = 22 𝑚/𝑠
