PHY 111 FOUNDATION PHYSICS I ASSIGNMENT#02 SEMESTER 1, 2023

Due Date: Friday 31st March, 2023

Problem 1

A boy of mass = 30 slides down a curved track of height ℎ = 3 . The boy starts at point with
a speed = 0 and reaches the bottom of the track at point with a speed .

a) If the track is frictionless, i.e. = 0, then find the speed .

b) If the track is rough and = 5 / , then find the work done by friction.

Problem 2

Consider a block of weight W hanging from three ropes as shown in figure below.

a) At what angle will the magnitude of the tensions and each be equal to the weight W.
b) Is this angle independent of W?
Problem 3

After applying its brakes on a dry road, a 1,000 kg car moving at = 40 / requires a minimum
distance d of 50 m to come to a complete stop without skidding as shown in the figure below.

a) Find the car’s acceleration.

b) Find the frictional force exerted on the car by the road.
c) Find the coefficient of static friction.

Problem 4

A block of mass located on a horizontal frictionless surface is connected by a light non-stretchable

cord that passes over a massless frictionless pulley to a second block of mass , which is allowed to
move on an inclined frictionless plane of angle ,as shown in figure below. Find the acceleration of the
two blocks and the tension in the cord when =2 , = 6 ,sin = 4/5, and cos = 3/5.

Problem 5

A tennis ball of mass = 0.04 ,moving with a speed of 5 / , has an elastic head-on collision
with a target ball of mass = 0.06 that was moving at a speed of 3 / , as shown in figure
below.

What is the velocity of each ball after the collision if the two balls are moving:

a) in the same direction as shown in figure a?

b) in opposite direction as shown in figure b?
Problem 6

In a ballistic pendulum, a bullet of mass = 10 is fired horizontally with a speed into a large
wooden stationary block of mass = 2 that is suspended vertically by two cords, as shown in
figure below. In a very short time, the bullet penetrates the pendulum and remains embedded. The
entire system starts to swing through a maximum height ℎ = 10 .

Find the relation that gives the speed in terms of the height ℎ, and then find its value.

Problem 7

A projectile of mass = moving along the direction with a speed = 10√3 / collides
elastically with a stationary target of mass = 2 . After the collision, the projectile is deflected at an
angle of 90°, as shown in figure below.

a) What is the speed and angle of the target after collision?

b) What is the final speed of the projectile and the fraction of kinetic energy transferred to the
target?
